Another year, another fabulous Red Nose Day bake sale What’s better than delicious food? Raising a smashing amount of money for Comic Relief – in fact, we raised just over £200, which beats our previous amount by more than £30! As you can see, there were some excellent treats on tables in both offices, really capturing the spirit of red nose day. Thank you all for your baking, buying, generosity and exemplary cake eating capabilities!

As it’s National Apprenticeship Week, it’s a good time to announce that we have an apprentice technician, Myles Walker, cutting his teeth in our Cambridge office. He began his apprenticeship at the end of last year, which runs in conjunction with a three-year BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Civil Engineering, which he undertakes at Cambridge Regional College on a day-release basis – each Tuesday during term time. Shoaib Gangat is his lead mentor, although several members of the team are also supporting Myles’ development. Myles’ hobbies include music (he is in a band), model making and visiting historic sites, as a member of English Heritage. He has also been a Royal Air Force Cadet – completing two years up to his departure in 2023. Whilst Myles has undertaken a couple of other ‘Saturday jobs’ as well as work experience in the past, this will be the first step on his career path. He comments ‘So far at Peter Dann I have found the experience to be very engaging, as I am able to improve my skills and knowledge of the industry while working on real projects. My colleagues are great sources of information and explain processes in a way that is easy for me to understand and apply to my work.’ We are enjoying having Myles as part of the team and the fresh perspective he brings. Following his achievement of chartership in 2024, we can announce that Matt Northwood-Kilsby has been promoted to Senior Engineer at Peter Dann Ltd. Matt joined our Cambridge office as a project engineer in July 2022, and since then has worked on many varied projects, ranging from the Hartham Leisure Centre to the Cambridge Science Park and Oakfield Gardens Crematorium, which was shortlisted for the National Building and Construction Awards. Peter Dann delivered both infrastructure and sub-structure engineering design for this award-winning, sustainable housing development in Huntingdon for Longhurst Group. The site comprises 56 homes of which 36 are affordable rent, 10 shared ownership and 10 rent-to-buy. The construction of the buildings included panellised housing with thermally efficient wall panels which were craned into place, providing an offsite, low-carbon approach using the MMC ECO 200 system from GreenSquareAccord. The site also incorporates ground source heat pumps. The panels have 200mm of insultation between the inside and external face, giving them a low U value and reducing heating costs for the user. Furthermore, the dwelling will be heated by a ground-source heat pump system which lowers energy bills for residents. Peter Dann also undertook the design of the highway and drainage infrastructure for the development achieving the necessary Section 104 and Section 38/278 adoption agreements with the Anglian Authority Water and Cambridgeshire County Council Highways respectively. #smarthousing #sustainablehousing #panelisedhousing #affordablehomes #socialhousing #peterdannengineers #

Meet Lefteris Karpozilos, a project engineer who joined our London office back in January of this year. He has become a permanent and very welcomed addition to our team. He hails from Thessaloniki in Greece, where his father is also a structural engineer, thus giving Lefteris valuable insight, experience and inspiration whilst studying in ‘one of the most earthquake-active countries in the world.‘ He says ‘I developed an interest in understanding how buildings can be designed to resist ground movement, particularly in taller structures. [I’m] fascinated by the remarkable ability of buildings and structures to stand tall and support enormous loads without being visibly affected.’ ‘What drives me even further in my work is the lasting impact of the structures I design. Knowing that the buildings and infrastructure I contribute to are designed with a lifespan of at least 50 years is incredibly rewarding. We are pleased to share news of Brook Green, our latest completed residential project. Works involved the extension of an existing basement, over which a rear extension was built in addition to the creation of a third floor on a mid-century townhouse. The basement was extended in size and depth to the rear of the property and a small area to the front for bike storage. Structural glass floor panels allow light into the centre and rear. The single-storey rear and side extension required openings to accommodate rooflights, whilst the reconfiguration of the internal space required the removal of existing walls and installation of steel frames to provide an open-plan setting. This week, staff in our Cambridge office celebrated not just one but three work anniversaries. Tommy Hogdson (left) made the 10 year milestone, Mark Dockerill (right) toasted 20 years and Matt Voutt (centre) reached 25. We’re very proud to have such talented, loyal members on our team and our thanks was, in part, a really splendid feast laid on by our office manager Helen.
