Adaptive reuse, refurbishment and restoration 🏛️ Our major cities and regional towns across #Yorkshire are blessed with a plethora of stunning #heritage assets, however breathing life back into these buildings requires creative #engineering solutions. Alongside Stephen Dam (Sewell Group), Jim Hopper (Doncaster Council) and Richard Gibbons (Market Asset Management Ltd), our Divisional Director Russel Greenwood CEng MCIBSE MIET FIHEEM UI-ATD shares his thoughts in Yorkshire Insider Media's latest publication. "The opportunity to repurpose our existing and historic building stock is almost endless. As an industry we are definitely seeing a shift from the 'let's just demolish it and start again' mentality. "The carbon savings from refurbishment or repurposing are clear and what better way to celebrate the history of our towns and cities, than to nurture, enhance and redevelop the strong architecture our country is blessed with. We won't see the kind of buildings built by the Victorians again so it's vital we protect these incredible assets which give our regional towns and cities so much of their character. "Of course, working within the constraints of existing structures often brings challenges. Creative engineering solutions need to be sought to ensure these buildings are transformed so they can operate to their maximum. In our experience this includes using the thermal mass, which can be significant in historic buildings, to optimise the environmental conditions. Likewise our specialist structural advice has secured a new lease of life to Queens Arcade in Leeds and the Sun Pavilion in Harrogate during their refurbishment and repair work. "Whilst our major cities continue to attract institutional funding for offices and residential it's our regional towns that need investment, Yorkshire towns such as Huddersfield where much of the funding isn't coming from the institutional investors, it's from the local councils who as we know are cash strapped. "The government's Towns Fund is doing good work, but we need more imagination to bring older buildings to life. We need people living and spending in our towns - they in turn bring much needed disposable income, helping to develop local economies and strengthen communities." 📖 Log-in and read the feature in full (P40/41) > https://lnkd.in/g8UAv_by

We recently completed the fantastic Mainholm project in Ayr for South Ayrshire Council through hub South West Scotland. It provided us with the opportunity to create an amazing community development comprising 160 much-needed newbuild affordable homes. A huge thanks to the design team of LMA Architects and Clancy Consulting, along with Project Managers Armour Construction Consultants, and also to our supply chain partners – it was truly a team effort that ensured a successful journey from start to finish. Projects like this allow us to continue our Apprenticeship Programme and also fulfil a number of Wider Role and Community Benefit initiatives - a strategy that is very much part of our ethos. We took the opportunity to piece together the attached case study to showcase the development, one which we are all very proud of. Thank you all from #TeamAshleigh. Run VT….
