With the UK budget taking place this week, there is growing uncertainty about the future of quantum funding from the UK government. Why is this a problem? Because decades of public investment have enabled the UK to become a world leader in quantum computing. Back in 2013, the UK was one of the first countries worldwide to launch a National Quantum Strategy, and companies like us have benefitted from the transformative effects of UK government funding. Over the years we have been able to direct critical research into developing quantum algorithms to solve complex challenges, from optimising the energy grids to the modelling of materials. If the government’s support for long-term innovation changes too quickly we risk losing the competitive advantage we have built, something our co-founder and CEO Ashley Montanaro’s recent article for UKTN explores. We could be only years away from being able to use quantum computers to solve real-world problems, but even as progress in hardware development continues at pace, the picture is more complicated than it appears at a first glance. Indeed, whilst larger quantum computers with a growing number of qubits make the headlines, our co-founder and CEO argues that it is another metric that is currently holding back some of the most exciting developments. Gate fidelity - the accuracy of quantum operations - is a critical factor that is overlooked, but it binds the size and complexity of algorithms that can be run on hardware. Without improvements in the accuracy of quantum operations, simply increasing qubits isn’t enough. However, prioritising gate fidelity means we could unlock quantum's potential and reach practical quantum advantage much sooner than anticipated - bringing this within the next few years, rather than the next decade. Delighted to announce that Nikitas Stamatopoulos, former Head of Quantum Computing Research at Goldman Sachs, has joined the US Phasecraft team, based in Washington DC! After receiving a DPhil in Field Theory and Cosmology, Nikitas has had a fascinating career so far, heading up quantum research at JPMorganChase before joining Goldman in 2020. With his combination of research and commercial understanding, Nikitas is an amazing addition to the Phasecraft team and to our efforts to deliver practical quantum advantage. We believe that quantum algorithms hold the key to reaching practical quantum advantage - when we will be able to use quantum computers to discover useful things such as modelling the materials for the batteries or solar panels of the future. Our Principal Quantum Scientist Glenn Jones spoke to Victoria Woollaston for E+T Magazine about the potential for quantum algorithms to shift the dial when it comes to modelling materials. This is all part of how we’re bridging the gap between quantum’s promise and real-world applications 💡 #quantumalgorithms #quantumcomputing #practicalquantumadvantage

We are delighted to announce that our team is one of just 8 worldwide proceeding to Phase 2 of the Wellcome Leap #quantum4bio programme. Together with University of Nottingham and QuEra Computing Inc. we will take our work on “Quantum computing for covalent inhibitors in drug discovery” to the next phase. With the discovery of new drugs being one of the most challenging tasks facing medical innovation, and consistently pushing the capabilities of current modelling tools to the limit, this project will show how we can harness the combined power of quantum computing and classical simulation methods to tackle key biochemical questions with applications to drug discovery for myotonic dystrophy. https://lnkd.in/gdz7YKfP
