Porotherm is the clay block walling system that offers a faster, safer & sustainable solution to concrete blocks.
Porotherm is revolutionising the UK’s construction industry through exceptionally fast, virtually dry construction combined with high strength and thermal efficiency. A natural progression from handmade bricks to engineered blocks, it is widely used and has been proven on numerous projects in Europe for over 50 years. It is ideal for use on projects from single to multiple-storeys with both domestic and commercial applications.
Since the product was launched in the UK nearly 15 years ago, it has been used on large scale construction projects by the likes of Willmott Dixon, Morgan Sindall Group and McCarthy Stone Retirement Living.
We've worked alongside many leading architects such as dRMM Architects and Glancy Nicholls Architects who have specified Porotherm for its low embodied carbon as well as its structural and thermal properties. The Library House by MacDonald Wright Architects won the RIBA London Award 2022 for its use of materials in meeting the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge, which included Porotherm.
We are looking to work with architects, engineers, self-builders; in fact anyone who is interested in using alternative materials to help reduce the amount of carbon in buildings. To learn more, please visit our website:

EH Smith is an authorised distributor of Porotherm in the UK.
This is a stunning refurb and extension in The Midlands!
Our good friend Robert Kocur from Jukoro Ltd has done an incredible job taking a very ordinary 1960s house and giving it the full Porotherm treatment!
Using our T9 365mm blocks, the property has been given a generous extension.
Robert was very familiar with Porotherm having used it for many years in Poland.
The owners now have a larger house for their family to grow into which delivers superb thermal performance and comfort.

You do not need lintels that big for windows this small...
This is for illustrative purposes only.
Because clay is such a flexible building material, it enables you to put boot cuts into Porotherm to bear lintels.
This is a detail approved by leading building warranty providers.
Alternatively you can put the lintel on the top of a full block as normal.
The point is, Porotherm gives you options.
Question: Can you create a curve with Porotherm?
Answer: Yes!
We've been playing around with some blocks for an architect who is working on a project with a sizeable curved wall.
Creating the curve with full-sized blocks is possible.
For a neater finish, you can cut the blocks in half.

There's more than one way to skin a cat.*
And there's more than one way to build with clay blocks.
The UK has a long history of building houses with a cavity between the inner leaf of blocks and the outer leaf of brick or block.
However it has a longer history of building solid brick walls.
Our monolithic blocks give all the structural and thermal benefits of thick masonry walls, but with a bit of modern engineering.
The blocks are ground on the top and bottom to within +/-0.5mm. This level of accuracy helps deliver buildings that don't suffer from settlement cracks inside or on the rendered outside.
At 365mm, 425mm or 490mm wide you can build a robust wall that meets modern u-value standards without a mountain of ancillary products like wall ties and weep vents.
Clay is fire resistant. It does not burn. It is non-combustible.
It can also manage atmospheric water vapour better than timber frame buildings and concrete blocks.

*We do not condone or suggest that cat skinning is in any way an acceptable pastime.
Housing ✅
Our 100mm blocks are being used onsite in Ascot for Nicholas King Homes
In the expert hands of RMD BRICKWORK LTD these houses will be:
- Thermally efficient
- Long lasting
- Comfortable
Clay stores heat and releases it slowly giving winter warmth and summer cooling.
Fired clay products last well in excess of 150 years.
Clay breathes helping to manage moisture in the wall. This leads to a lower risk of damp and the associated health issues that it can lead to.
Whether you are designing, engineering or building, check out how Porotherm can do more for your project than simply keep the roof off the floor 👍
Bricklayers who get Porotherm, *get* Porotherm!
RMD BRICKWORK LTD is a bricklaying subcontractor with years of experience delivering high quality housing with Porotherm.
It's always great to see an advocate promoting their work by promoting our blocks! 😁
Back in 2022/23 we supplied Morgan Sindall Construction with our 100mm and 140mm blocks.
The project was a care home for Lovell Later Living.
For a variety of reasons, including a desire to reduce the embodied carbon in the structure, Porotherm was chosen as the main material for the shell of the building.
Morgan Sindall describes our system perfectly on their website;
"Porotherm Blocks is a modern clay block structural walling system, which provide versatile, high performance and sustainable results. These innovative bricks are easy to use, environmentally friendly, and versatile. They are low weight, strong, durable, and can be used for both load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls."

Collaboration across disciplines 👏🏻
This is what our industry needs.
Innovation doesn't have to mean complication. Sometimes going back to basics is as innovative as inventing something new.
We'd love to hear from contractors, structural engineers, architects and quantity surveyors who want to understand how Porotherm brings value to construction projects of *any* size.
Drop us an email on info@porothermuk.co.uk to arrange for a demonstration or CPD.

What do we want?
Innovation in construction!
When do we want it?
It's already happening!
We had a very informative evening in the company of industry experts at the EH Smith Architectural Solutions showroom on St John Street, Clerkenwell.
Expertly organised by Dave Mills of Lyons & Annoot Ltd we saw several presentations on how the masonry sector is changing at pace to try and reduce embodied carbon.
The solutions ranged from a complete overhaul of manufacturing sites, to using alternative fuels to make bricks, to making bricks that sequester CO2, to more traditional routes to save carbon such as through using rail transport rather than road haulage all the time.
Our own contribution was to highlight the carbon saving and simplification of fire protection by using our cavity range of blocks as an alternative to SFS on concrete frame infill projects.
Besides the hard work put in by the organisers, our thanks go to Emily Landsborough, Sarah Le Gresley, Alexis Harrison, Mathew Davies and Owen Gallagher for their collaboration and for providing such great insights.
P.S. It's really easy to attach a TV to a Porotherm wall 😉
