About us

Pride in STEM is a charitable trust run by an independent group of LGBT+ scientists & engineers from around the world. We're proud of who we are and what we do. STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) seem to have low numbers of out LGBT+ people, both for personal or environmental reasons. By showing that not everyone working in STEM fits the same mould, we hope to challenge the general public’s perceptions of what scientists should be like. It is becoming more and more evident that embracing diversity, in all its forms, is vital for the future of the innovation that science, and the world, relies so heavily upon. As such, we’re here to share our voice as LGBT+ individuals in STEM who want to show that science is for everyone.

Inclusion in Schools Consultant, Freelance Science Communicator and Asexuality Advocate

I am going full time freelance in September! (please reshare this post to your networks) I have been working part time and freelancing for just over 6 years. Sadly my part time role at the ASE will be coming to an end soon. I will miss working on the Inclusion in Science programme and my team, some of which I have worked with for a long time. I am using this as an opportunity to become a full time freelancer from September. My services will be focused on science engagement, the development and delivery of training and equity, diversity and inclusion. Examples of my previous clients are: universities, research institutes, businesses, festivals, museums and those within the education sector. For more information about my services, please go to my website: https://lnkd.in/eXbPpMZk

So very cool getting to present "Queer(ing) Ecologies..." at The Royal Institution on Friday as part of "The Big Science Pride Party" organised by Pride In Stem! We talked about the reality of perspective, the origins of bias, the essential core of decolonising biology and breaking down ecology, centring global majority and queer global majority folk in the structures we use to break this down, why penguins aren't gay (but also are)...and of course, cave bug genitalia! This is not something I'd ever thought I'd be able to do, and whilst I am generally very much against institutional constructs, the opportunity was one where it really intertwined queer global majority people and a chance to break the cycle and provide a regenerative alternative future to a broken system. What I am working towards - essentially - is the undermining of an assumed reality. By doing that, I am needing to get to grips with the terrible imposed realities of the society I exist within, in order for the liberation of mindsets to occur, in order that we can progress to systems that better hold explosive and unhindered thrival. I'm so happy that I get to share more about the work I'm doing, the boundaries that are being pushed, the liberation that is occurring, and I'm excited to share more as I do more and deconstruct even further the wierd and wonderful systems of biology 🪲🐝🦋 #Queer #Ecology #Nature #Wildlife #Liberation #Futures #Bugs #Trans #Scicomm

We are pleased to announce our next DiviQ Summit to be held virtually on Thursday, June 13th, 2024, from 9 am - 12 pm Pacific Time. Our theme is “Proud to Be in Quantum” - all are welcome. Please register here: https://lnkd.in/g-Kcrx27 Inspired by Queer Pride Month, we will highlight the pride we all feel being part of the quantum ecosystem. Together, we’ll hear from leaders in the industry and learn about quantum companies seeking talent, as well. Speaker line up to be finalized in the coming week - keep an eye on our DiviQ LinkedIn for more details. We are also excited to share that we will be detailing our DiviQ Travel Scholarship program, underwritten by our good friends at SandboxAQ. Join us to learn more about how we can help young researchers and quantum professionals defray the costs of presenting their work and attending technical conferences. No quantum experience or knowledge is necessary for this summit; come with your curiosity and a willingness to expand your network. We welcome everyone. We’ll be sharing profiles of our speakers here on LinkedIn shortly. #DiviQ #quantumpride #quantumcomputing #stem

Hi all,   Sorry for the brief message – I have a broken hand so tricky to type!   Could you please advertise the project (flyer attached) to your ( UK & US) LGBTIQ+ colleagues .   We often hear the experiences of people in STEM who have faced discrimination, but  rarely those who left/ changed their careers due to this discrimination. I realise your networks may be mostly people still in STEM but I’m hoping your reach will get to some of those who left. We want to hear and reflect those stories (from people in the US and UK only – sorry, project limitations!)   To note, what counts as leaving is self-defined by the person filling out the survey. To us, this includes moves that were forced. So maybe a move out of research/academia into comms/teaching/tech roles. I appreciate these roles are still within STEM and really awesome – but I know some felt like forced moved to friends (and myself when I became a lab manager) so we will leave it to applicant to decide if they were forced down particular paths they may not have followed otherwise. (I hope that makes sense!)   This is a pre-screen survey. Asking for info that will be kept confidential. It’s not very long. From the results we will invite some people to take part in the main project (which will be compensated). We want to make sure we have a diverse range of voices reflected in the project (but cannot speak with everyone – only so many hours in the day!).   Thanks everyone. Feel free to ask questions (but the answer may be a little slow/short). Anyone that wants to ask more about the survey can also get in touch.   Clara #stem #science
