Responsible agricultural & forestry production & sourcing that delivers positive outcomes for people, nature & climate
About us
Proforest is a dynamic not-for-profit organisation with global presence that has established itself as a leader in the development and implementation of sustainable production and sourcing of agricultural and forestry commodities, including soy, sugar, palm oil, cocoa, beef and timber. We support agricultural and forestry production and sourcing that delivers positive outcomes for people, nature and climate through supporting companies, effective collaboration and developing knowledge and capacity building. Within and beyond supply chains, we work with companies, government departments, non-governmental and civil society organizations, to have positive social and environmental outcomes in the places where commodities are produced. These positive outcomes provide the compass for all our work, including protecting and restoring forests and natural ecosystems, conserving biodiversity, advancing gender equality and respecting human rights. Last Tuesday, we were honored to participate in the Proforest Landscape Exchange Week in Pekanbaru, where our Independent Smallholders Superintendent, Linda, shared insights as a speaker. She highlighted our unique journey and strategy of supporting Village Extension Officers (VEOs) in districts, focusing on engaging smallholders, even those outside our supply chain. “Over time, we realized that #sustainability challenges such as deforestation, environmental degradation, and social exploitation require a broader, landscape-based approach. This led us to develop the #SmallholdersHub, where we collaborate with stakeholders, including Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), local governments, and global partners, to implement #SustainablePractices across entire regions.” Musim Mas remains deeply committed to fostering long-term partnerships with Independent Smallholders across our supply chain. Looking ahead, we will continue to enhance our resilience and sustainability efforts, ensuring lasting impact for all stakeholders. #SmallholderResilience #SustainablePalmOil

The Landscape Exchange Week (LEW) is in full swing with a field visit to key sites of the Siak Pelalawan Landscape Programme (SPLP) in Siak, Indonesia. Our global team, together with Daemeter and Lingkar Temu Kabupaten Lestari | Secretariat visited a palm oil plantation managed by the smallholders of Koperasi Beringin Jaya (KBJ/Beringin Jaya cooperatives). KBJ received their Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification in 2019 as the first independent smallholder group on peatland in the world that was successfully RSPO certified. LEW aims to expand the Regional Landscape Objectives for the Proforest Global strategy by gathering inputs, not just from our team, but also with inputs from our partners.

Really looking forward to discussing this crucial topic on 5th November with the Forest Conservation Fund and great speaker lineup: Empowering Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities to conserve rainforests in sourcing landscapes. https://lnkd.in/eVAa8bid

We’ll link nature-based solutions and climate commitments to responsible sourcing of natural raw materials (e.g. palm oil, rubber, timber, pulp and paper products, coconut, cocoa, coffee, minerals, and aquaculture….) and sourcing landscape and forest-positive approaches. Buying from suppliers not deforesting now needs to be complemented by actively protecting standing rainforests in sourcing landscapes. Really productive week in the US with The Consumer Goods Forum's Forest Positive Coalition! https://lnkd.in/eFTy_PzM
Exciting discussions the past two days with The Consumer Goods Forum’s #ForestPositive Coalition steering committee meetings in McLean, Virginia! We have had several sessions that include a deep dive into the Coalition’s achievements over the past year and a strategic discussion on goals and priorities for 2025. The discussions helped refine and adjust the strategy to enable the coalition's efforts to achieve its objectives towards a forest positive future. As well as a session focused on embedding human rights within the Coalition’s forest-positive initiatives. By discussing how responsible practices align with both environmental sustainability and ethical governance, we’re working to shape a more resilient future. Thank you to Mars for hosting us this week and to our members in attendance including Alexander Murillo, Ana Rovisco, Carlos A. Guzman, Cathy Pieters, Clare clifton, Danielle King, Emily Kunen, Felipe Carazo, Hélène Dieck, Ph D, Hillary Fenrich, Jade Mauzat, Joost Koomen, Kevin Rabinovitch, Dr Liz Wilks, Martin Huxtable, Michael Weber, Mikel Hancock, Miriam Navarro Fdz, Nira Johri, Rhiannon Davies, Ronald Jacoby, Ruth Nussbaum, Sarah Smith, Silvia Castro Torres, Stephanie Zhu, Tara Dermott, Joseph James, Antoine Blanc, and Barry Parkin. Last week, the European Commission announced that it will be seeking a twelve-month delay to the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation. Proforest has been working with a wide range of partners on EUDR readiness. While we have first-hand experience with the various practical issues and structural barriers that complicate effective implementation, we also believe that all the work that governments and companies have done towards EUDR compliance is - and remains – critical. That said, the additional time offers a window to accelerate action that drives meaningful improvements for rural livelihoods and forest protection on the ground. We will be engaging and convening our partners on how to achieve the above and find effective ways to navigate and find EUDR solutions. At this stage, we recommend all companies that have obligations under the EUDR to: ☑️ Maintain ongoing efforts to implement and enhance their EUDR compliance strategies, policies and procedures. ☑️ Use the next twelve months to really focus on where we have already identified potential unintended consequences of EUDR, including supporting small-scale producers in high-risk areas and in support of producer country led processes to ensure smallholder inclusion. ☑️ Continue to work on the implementation of global Deforestation and Conversion Free commitments to effectively address deforestation and conversion across their entire supply base (irrespective of specific requirements under the EUDR). This includes collective action within and beyond individual company supply chains. This extension period underscores the importance of strengthening many aspects of the regulation and it is essential that we, as a sector, continue to work to maintain momentum given the urgent need for action. www.proforest.net
