Last month the team were out in Dale as part of our annual monitoring. Unfortunately, due to adverse weather conditions we were unable to carry out the monitoring we had intended. We did however plant out 150 plants from our seagrass nursery, attaching the plants to some sturdy pins. This is the first time we have sent out plants from the nursery in autumn and to a subtidal site so future monitoring will determine if they survive the winter storm season. The team also used the opportunity to meet with members of the local community who shared details of new patches of seagrass that have been seen in Dale! 🌱

Great to catch up with you at the CCN Gathering! 🌊
Honoured to have represented Moray Ocean Community at the Coastal Communities Network this weekend on the Isle of Cumbrae with fellow Directors Robyn Love & Terrie Sawyer 🌊 It was such a fantastic weekend full of incredible connections, opportunities and discussions with coastal community groups from across Scotland. There are pages of notes to digest, type up and share but a few highlights included: 🌟 A face to face meeting with Ceris Jones our Capacity Building support from Fauna & Flora and the other groups on the capacity building project; Edinburgh Shoreline Project, Clean Coast Outer Hebrides and MacCOLL (can't wait for our own mini gathering!) 🌊 Getting out to the coast with Texa Sim., PhD refreshing our skills with the NatureScot Community Biodiversity Monitoring Project 💙 Bringing arts, culture and heritage into what we can do as a coastal community group with inspiration from so many members presenting this weekend (fellow Director Lynne Laing we have lots to discuss!) 🏊♀️ Our wonderful swim with Kerrie Flockhart & Violet 📊 Hearing how impressed attendees were with Moray Ocean Community data - a big motivation for us to keep going with our surveys! ( Huge kudos for this to another fellow Director Francis Williams !) ⚽ Beating team Seagrass at table football on Saturday night 🤣😉 Katy Waring Project Seagrass 💰 Learning about more funding opportunities to help us create a sustainable organisation My Ocean Optimism is absolutely full to the brim and can't wait to do more with the amazing folk who make up Moray Ocean Community It was also fab to meet up with new Marine Conservation Society colleague Eric Holden as well as so many friends old and new! Earlier this month our Senior Conservation Officer Katy attended the yearly gathering for coastal communities from the CCN Network facilitated by Fauna and Flora International. The event was held on the island of Millport at their field studies centre. The 3-day event was inspiring; groups from around Scotland showcased their projects, held skill-sharing workshops, and collectively unpacked common challenges such as funding, advocacy, and management to explore collaborative solutions. Many of the seagrass groups we connected with this year were in attendance and the gathering provided an opportunity to catch up and explore opportunities for collaboration in 2025. As part of the gathering, Katy delivered a pilot of a new survey developed as part of "Accelerate Seagrass" a collaborative programme with Climate Impact Partners, Deloitte and the National Oceanography Centre. The survey aims to connect with local ecological knowledge around Scotland on both current and historical seagrass and to understand localised drivers of decline. This data will help identify areas for tailored conservation and restoration work from a social-ecological perspective ensuring resilience of projects. Earlier this month, the team at Project Seagrass co-organised the 6th seminar for the Global Seagrass Nursery Network (GSNN). 35 attendees from 10 different countries joined to hear presentations from network members in Portugal, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, New Zealand and South Africa. The aim of the GSNN is to share knowledge/learnings and provides an opportunity for network members to discuss what they have found success in, limitations in, and tips and tricks for having a successful seagrass nursery. If you would like to know more about our network and participate, please contact: nurserynetwork@projectseagrass.org Deakin University, CQUniversity, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

Thank you to Lee Waters MS who joined us in Llanelli to learn about our work to restore seagrass across South & West Wales 🌱 As part of the visit we visited our planting site in Llanelli and discussed the National Seagrass Action Plan presented to the Senedd by Seagrass Network Cymru. The National Seagrass Action Plan presents a blueprint of action over the next five years to achieve a vision where Welsh seagrass meadows are supporting marine biodiversity, vibrant communities, a sustainable economy and making a valuable contribution to the climate emergency response.
