These entrenched lies enable individuals to justify mistreatment of Africa and her direct descendants. When confronted with the truth, individuals often react defensively, having been conditioned to uphold the deceptive framework that benefits the oppressive system. The lies many have consumed regarding Africa is both sickening and deeply flawed, even something a simple as her size. Specifically, Africa has historically been subjected to exploitation, affecting both her people and her rich resources. Despite this, the continent is frequently undervalued and dismissed as inconsequential. However, it is crucial to recognise that the global community's vitality is inherently tied to Africa and her inhabitants. Acknowledging this reality challenges the prevailing narratives that favour comfortable falsehoods over uncomfortable truths, suggesting that the allure of these deceptions is often more palatable than the stark realities we must face. Well let me tell you take a seat 💺 Billy's story during the American Revolution sheds light on the complexities faced by enslaved individuals during this tumultuous period in history. As an enslaved man from Virginia, Billy found himself entangled in a legal battle that centered around the concept of treason and citizenship. During the American Revolution, when the fight for independence from British rule was at its peak, Billy's status as an enslaved person put him in a precarious position. Despite not having the rights and privileges of a citizen, he was charged with treason, a crime typically reserved for those who betray their allegiance to the government. The decision to charge Billy with treason likely stemmed from his actions or perceived disloyalty during the turbulent times of the Revolution. However, his case took a unique turn when a letter was written on his behalf, arguing that as a slave, Billy was not considered a citizen and therefore could not commit treason against a government to which he owed no allegiance. This argument challenged the traditional notions of citizenship and loyalty, highlighting the paradoxical position of enslaved individuals who were expected to pledge allegiance to a government that did not recognize their humanity or rights. The letter advocating for Billy's pardon sought to address this contradiction and ultimately succeeded in securing his release in 1781. Billy's story serves as a poignant reminder of the inherent injustices and contradictions present in a society built on principles of freedom and equality, yet rife with systemic oppression and denial of basic rights to certain individuals based on their race and status. His experience highlights the complexities of navigating the legal and social structures of the time as an enslaved person and the enduring struggle for recognition, justice, and freedom. Billy's case contributed to a broader discourse on the nature of citizenship, rights, and equality during the American Revolution, prompting individuals to question the fundamental principles upon which the new nation was being built. It served as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for recognition, rights, and liberation faced by marginalised communities, and highlighted the need for a more inclusive and equitable society that truly lived up to the ideals of freedom and democracy espoused during that revolutionary period. LinkedIn followers stay with me class is in session. Drapetomania was a pseudo-scientific diagnosis created in the 19th century by American physician Samuel A. Cartwright. He believed that enslaved Africans who attempted to escape were suffering from a mental illness characterised by an irrational urge to flee from slavery. Cartwright claimed that this condition could be diagnosed based on symptoms such as restlessness, disobedience, and a propensity to run away. The concept of drapetomania was deeply rooted in the racist ideology of the time, portraying the desire for freedom as a form of pathology rather than a natural response to the brutalities of slavery. It served to pathologise resistance to slavery and justify the institution of slavery itself. Drapetomania has been widely discredited and condemned as a pseudoscience and a tool of oppression. It reflects the dehumanising and discriminatory beliefs that were used to justify slavery and control enslaved individuals. The term is now recognised as a stark reminder of the insidious ways in which power structures have been used to demonise and oppress Black people. The concept of drapetomania had a significant impact on the treatment of enslaved individuals during the time it was promoted by Samuel A. Cartwright and other proponents of slavery. By psychologising the desire for freedom and resistance to slavery as a mental illness, enslavers used drapetomania as a justification for harsher control measures and increased surveillance of enslaved people. Enslaved individuals who expressed a desire to escape or resist their enslavement risked being subjected to death , violence, punishment, or even medical interventions based on the false belief of drapetomania. The effects of drapetomania as a concept are still felt today in several ways. The historical legacy of dehumanising enslaved individuals and justifying their oppression through pseudoscientific theories like drapetomania continues to shape perceptions of race, freedom, and mental health. Moreover, the impact of drapetomania highlights the enduring consequences of systemic racism and the devaluation of Black lives. The notion that seeking freedom and autonomy is a sign of mental illness reinforces harmful stereotypes and undermines the agency and humanity of Black individuals. Recognising and understanding the historical context of drapetomania is crucial in addressing ongoing issues of racism, oppression, and the legacy of slavery. By confronting and challenging these harmful narratives, we can work towards creating a more just and equitable society that respects the dignity and rights of all individuals. As I continue to work within progressive organisations, I aim to establish psychological safety for all.
