Delivering on UK Net Zero

About us

PPP Climate is a part of the UK events and public-private sector convening organisation, Public Policy Projects (PPP). In March 2023, PPP launched Mission Zero Coalition as a separate company to build momentum from the Mission Zero report, authored and led by the former Energy and Clean Growth Minister, The Rt Hon Chris Skidmore OBE MP. The Coalition provided an independent platform for exchanging insights, experiences and ideas on Net Zero policy development for the UK. July 2024 marked both five years since the UK signed its net zero commitment into law and the conclusion of the intended body of work of Mission Zero Coalition. The work of the Coalition now continues as part of the wider climate portfolio covered by PPP Climate. PPP Climate specialises in bringing together senior leaders and practitioners in the public and private sectors to find realistic solutions to the most pressing issues relating to climate change. As an independent ‘broker’ of effective public-private sector collaboration, we help businesses to grow their profile in the local and national public sectors, and in the international diplomat community. Though our round tables, live events and reports we support local authorities, national government, and third party organisations with practical recommendations on implementing policy to drive positive climate change outcomes for local populations. 🌍 💚 Partnerships in climate and healthcare

Disappointing (and confusing) finish to COP16, although maybe I was being overly optimistic as to what I thought might be achieved. Discussions around how to mobilise finances should have come much earlier on the agenda. Of course there was some positive steps taken but without the key actions of setting up the appropriate funding mechanisms and framework for monitoring how biodiversity loss is tackled, overall progress will be significantly limited. Two years ago Public Policy Projects and PPP Climate released our Climate Crisis and its health impacts report - https://lnkd.in/erZYgnSD with the programme chaired by Seb Dance. Seb's foreword ends by saying 'When we take action on climate, we take action on health. They are two sides of the same coin' - as true today as it was on the day when it was written. I wonder what those involved with the report and others think of the progress or lack of progress made over the past two years and how in the UK, our NHS and wider public services will continue to be further and further stretched as climate change continues to adversely impact our mental health, air quality and leads to an increase in the likelihood of infectious diseases, heatwaves and floods....? You can also read a summary of the report if you have five minutes while having your Monday morning cuppa: https://lnkd.in/eV7Tg64K)

Let’s raise the bar on emission reduction targets! 📣   The UK’s Climate Change Committee (CCC) has advised an 81% reduction in CO2 emissions from 1990 levels by 2035. This builds on from the government’s existing target of a 68% reduction by 2030. The latest science, technological developments, and national circumstances have informed this figure. Achieving it in a way that benefits the economy will require greater investments into low carbon technologies and robust long-term policy plans, which must be reflected in the upcoming budget. What do you think of these targets? Let us know in the comments and follow our page for regular updates on UK Climate Action. #ClimateAction #Sustainability #ClimateChangeCommittee

🌎 COP16 – a peak at this year’s biodiversity agenda 🌎    COP16 in Cali, Colombia has finally kicked off. Around 12,000 delegates from almost 200 countries will be debating measures to save nature from unprecedented rates of destruction.    It has been two years since the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was established. Now, states are expected to submit national biodiversity plans to meet four long-term goals and 23 nationally agreed global targets to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.    Key targets of the framework include placing 30% of territories under protection by 2030, halving food waste, practicing sustainable agriculture, and cutting pollution from pesticides and plastics.    Major discussions this year will include:   💰 Funding: new funding efforts and mechanisms to boost capital for nature are expected.   🧬 Genetic resources: fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources will be negotiated.    👪 Inclusion of indigenous communities: plans to use traditional knowledge indicators within biodiversity efforts will be discussed.   Let us know your thoughts below and follow our page for regular updates on UK climate action!     #Biodiversity #COP16 #ClimateAction

♻️ The design for life roadmap – a circular future for UK med-tech ♻️ The UK government’s new initiative supports the design, procurement and processing of medical products in a way that enables them to be reused, remanufactured or recycled. Greater circularity in the UK health sector will foster growth and innovation, improve patient care, build NHS resilience, create better value for healthcare spending, and minimise environmental impacts. By addressing six fundamental challenge areas, the programme will aim to deliver a circular system by 2045. 🤝 Leadership and alignment 🧠 Behavioural change 💰 Commercial incentivisation 📜 Regulations and standards 🛠️ Physical and digital infrastructure 💡 Transformative innovation The roadmap proposes 30 actions to tackle these challenges, some of which are ready to implement, whilst others require significant further research. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eQQpaGra To learn more about how you can effectively engage with these exciting plans, alongside the existing NHS net zero supplier roadmap, email kieran.cornwell@publicpolicyprojects.com. 🌞 The massive potential of UK clean energy industries🌞 The UK government’s green paper for their upcoming industrial strategy, ‘Invest 2030’, acknowledges the economic potential of clean energy industries. Here are some key take aways… 💰 In the period to 2030, low-carbon products represent a £1 trillion for British businesses, according to estimates.  💸 An additional £50-60 billion in capital investment will be required each year through the late 2020s and 2030s to achieve our Net Zero ambitions.  📈 Growth multipliers associated with clean energy investment (1.1-1.5) are larger than those associated with fossil fuels.  🌍 The UK is well positioned, with a comparative advantage in established and emerging clean energy industries, and a developed services sector.  👷 By 2030, low-carbon sectors could create up to 725,000 jobs. What are your thoughts on the potential of clean energy in the UK? Follow our page for regular updates on UK climate action.  #NetZero #ClimateAction #CleanEnergy #GreenEconomy #Sustainability

👑🌿 The Crown Estate’s New Ambition for Nature Recovery 🌿👑 The Crown Estate has unveiled its plan for Nature Recovery across its diverse assets on land and seabed. Their ambitions align with domestic and global commitments to halt nature’s decline by 2030 and contribute to its recovery by 2050. The Crown Estates’ integrated approach aims to align nature recovery with net zero developments, placemaking, and community support. Here are their three new goals… 🦋 Deliver a measurable increase in biodiversity across the Crown Estate’s holdings by 2030. 🐬 Protect and restore freshwater, marine, and coastal systems within the Crown Estate’s influence by 2030. 🌸 Increase social and well-being benefits from nature, delivering measurable health and well-being benefits by 2030, with a focus on community engagement. What do you think of these goals? Protecting biodiversity will be a key theme at PPP Climate’s upcoming Climate 25 Summit on the 28th of November 2024. ⚠️ No more coal, BUT… ⚠️ Following the closure of the UK’s last coal-fired power plant, we are welcoming a new era of cleaner energy production. This is a huge milestone on our journey to net zero, but we shouldn’t lose sight of the big picture! Ratcliffe-on-Soar operated for 56 years, but other energy sources are unlikely to last this long so it’s important to integrate them within the circular economy to minimise waste. Here are a couple of interesting facts… ⚡Renewables like solar and wind increase demand for critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare-earth metals. The IEA projects a six-fold increase in mineral input by 2040 to achieve net zero. ♻️ By recycling and reusing materials, we can reduce the need for mining and access more low carbon resources. Key materials to the transition, like neodymium, currently have extremely poor recycling rates. #RenewableEnergy #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Recycling
