In an interview with Future net zero, Margaret Read - Director of Policy at the National Infrastructure Commission - had this to say about energy efficiency: "it's a vital part of the decarbonisation equation". Stressing the importance of insulation, Margaret said: “not only will insulation reduce costs, particularly for vulnerable customers, but it also means that heat pumps run more efficiently in those homes.” From our work, where we are deploying our floor insulation (using robotics and AI) alongside heat pumps, we have seen heat pump running cost reductions by as much as 30%. News today that mortgage lenders have written to Rt Hon Rachel Reeves proposing a Stamp Duty ‘rebate to renovate’ that would incentivise homeowners to improve the energy performance of their homes. Leaky homes account for 35% of UK energy demand. We warmly welcome the proposal, driven by the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and the Energy Efficiency Infrastructure Group. Thanks for the literal and metaphorical platform Juliette, and Climate Connection. I love this monthly event in London, have learned so much from the speakers and participants over the last 18 months since Henry introduced me to it, and was honoured to have the opportunity to share the 'Why' behind all we do at Q-Bot Ltd to improve comfort, health and energy efficiency of drafty UK homes.
🏠 30% of a typical UK home's energy use can be lost due to poor insulation. In fact, over 5,000 excess deaths occurred in the UK last winter due to cold homes. At Climate Tech Time, John Burley, CTO of Q-Bot Ltd, shared how they’re using robots and AI to scale the improvement of UK home insulation. Using robots, Q-Bot has insulated 5,000 homes, saving 2,500 tons of carbon per year. 🤖 Want to learn more about how Q-Bot is addressing fuel poverty? How do you increase your chances of being successful with a WH:SHF application? Q-Bot have been supporting clients with property analysis, data insights and under floor insulation installations through all phases of previous government funded #retrofit schemes, and are here to support you through the planning and delivery of your application. Accurate property data, helps to support success bids, and improve the effectiveness of delivery in a number of ways including; · Identifying suitable and similar archetypes · Improving resident engagement · Reducing unnecessary surveys and property visits · Facilitating area-based delivery, at scale Property data is recognised as being inconsistent, and often unreliable. Whilst two thirds of UK homes have an EPC certificate, many are inaccurate, and this is particularly prevalent in floor construction type records. Suspended timber flooring was the predominant construction methodology for floors up to the 1960’s. Many homes built after 1919 have a mixture of both suspended timber and solid concrete floors, and this is not necessarily reflected in an EPC. Combined with a third of homes having no EPC, it is easy to appreciate that knowledge of property archetypes with suspended timber floors is limited. Q-Bot recognised the need to help property owners identify the construction type of their buildings’ floors, and the value of more accurate data when planning retrofit projects, and we have developed an analysis methodology to help landlords enrich their knowledge of their housing stock. Built different 🏘️ 🏡 🏗️ 🏢 Greenhouse gas emissions from the built environment constitute 20% of the total emissions we produce in the UK annually. We need to reduce the environmental impact of our buildings - it's a huge challenge, which has led to a flourishing, highly innovative built environment startup sector developing cutting-edge solutions across the supply chain. So, what's the plan to harness this innovation and decarbonise this sector? Check out Startup Coalition's latest report 👉 https://lnkd.in/etC4zD5N "This sector is a national asset... If these startups are let loose on the challenge of decarbonising the built environment, we will not just accelerate climate action in the sector, but scale solutions that can then be exported across the globe to decarbonise the built environment everywhere. To unlock this opportunity we must set the sector up for success with policies that work." Big firms, regulators and red tape are holding back the decarbonisation of buildings and homes in the UK, and the growth of the UK’s £900m built environment startup sector. Today, Startup Coalition sets out a plan to fix this - a plan to make the UK Built Different. 💰 Evidence shows that insulating homes properly could save the UK economy £136bn over thirty years including £13bn to the NHS alone, but successive governments have failed to produce a credible plan to decarbonise buildings and homes. ⚙ UK Startups are building cutting edge tech to reduce bills, fix our leaky homes, and reduce the impact of buildings on our planet. They’re needed more than ever as Labour plans to put more spades in the ground, and energy bills continue to bite. 🌹 We're pleased to launch this just days after our panel at Labour Party Conference in partnership with Checkatrade where we dived into accelerating decarbonisation in the built environment, through tech, innovation, and combatting the skills challenge to power this transition. 💡Our blueprint has 10 steps, from building markets for low carbon materials, to developing a sandbox for retrofit tech which is currently drowning in red tape. It’s also time to empower homeowners to access their data from Smart Meters. 🌍 These changes will save cash and carbon. By following our steps, Labour can shore up the foundations for homes and buildings that work for people and the planet - powered by cutting edge, UK-made tech.
