Symrise AG Master Perfumer #MauriceRoucel, dsm-firmenich Perfumery & IngredientsFabrice Pellegrin, and Quintessence Fragrances Tristan Badard : three generations of perfumers, united by their love and expertise in tuberose For Maurice Roucel, an encounter with tuberose while exploring the Asian market and collaborating with Cochine Ltd sparked a transformative relationship with the ingredient. “I wanted to blend tuberose’s rich, heady notes with a raw, earthy element. The result in Cochine’s Tuberose Absolute & Sandalwood is exquisite!” From his upbringing in Grasse to creating Diptyque Paris’s iconic 'Do Son', Fabrice Pellegrin has continually redefined tuberose. Now, as Director of Natural Products Innovation at dsm-firmenich, he pioneers the quality of tuberose and strengthens global partnerships with key suppliers. Reflecting on his creative and technical evolution, he shares, “Earlier in my career, my goal was to modernise tuberose with fresher, floral tones. Now, I seek to tell new stories and explore its contrasts.” Tristan Badard, a leading perfumer at Quintessence Fragrances, is excited about the resurgence of white floral and opulent scents. He shares his passion for tuberose paired with fruity notes: “I love combining tuberose with pear or strawberry for a creamy, palatable effect.” Explore their exclusive insights and more in this Friday’s newsletter: https://lnkd.in/gfC_8Q4n

Perfumer Spotlight Series: Discover the Artists Behind Our Fragrances. Introducing Mireille Picard… Growing up in a French castle in Loire Valley, Mireille was enchanted by the aromas in her mother’s garden. Magnolia, freesia, primrose, lilac, peony, honeysuckle – the list goes on. This early love for scents transitioned into a keen interest in men’s fragrances, which led her to perfumery school in Provence and, in 1998, to working with us at Quintessence. Recently, Mireille’s father found out that his great grand uncle was Georges de Laire, the first chemist to create some of the most used chemical ingredients used in perfumery today. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿? It’s not very glamourous, but when I was 17 and went to orientation/career class, and I realised that there was such a thing as a perfumery school! 𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆?  Yes, Timut Pepper, I love its zingy zestyness and originality. And more recently I love Roasted Tonka Extract, which brings a gourmand but sensual and warm effect at the same time. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲? It’s more a blissful than a happy memory - when I was dancing the Brazilian partner dance called Forró, with the best dancer ever, and he was wearing the perfume that I had created for him, and I was swirling in his arms.

Perfumer Spotlight Series: Discover the Artists Behind Our Fragrances.   First up is our Director of Perfumery, François, who is a fourth-generation perfumer; the son of Guy Robert, and the great nephew of Perfumer Henri Robert. He grew up exploring the jasmine and rose fields of Grasse, and started training at Parfums Rochas at just 14-years-old to become the master perfumer he is today. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞? I believe a fragrance should be a balance of tradition and innovation. As a young perfumer, I was trying to create innovative fragrances, but found it was too new and scared many consumers. A twist on a known accord will reassure consumers, as long as we still have a creative touch. My mentors were suggesting a blend of 10% creativity with 90% of an commercial accord. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲? I believe it is when I smell, in a public place, a fragrance which I have created. It is very rewarding and exciting, and satisfying since I can recognise the fragrance without a doubt. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫? When I started in perfumery, in the 80’s, the role of the perfumer started to change from being an “artist” to become more of a technician. The time needed to create beautiful complex fragrances was dramatically cut and we had to accelerate the development. Nowadays, with 5 or 6 launches in the same year for some brands, it does not leave the time to create innovative fragrances. New launches are not lasting on the market and one of the reasons is the lack of “hook” or “creativity”. There is a race from the brands to stay in the spotlight by launching “flankers”. I remember my great uncle was creating a new fragrance every 10 to 15 years. Today we have 3 or 4 launches every year. Luckily we still have great creations which are marking the industry by their innovation, balance or audacity, Baccarat Rouge 540 for example.
