Commenting on the new report by the Mayors of Greater Manchester and the West Midlands which sets out a new route between Cheshire and Staffordshire, Railway Industry Association Chief Executive Darren Caplan said: “This report is a reminder of the incredibly strong link between rail connectivity and economic development. It shows that the future prosperity of the Midlands and the North hinges on the provision of new rail capacity, and sets out some bold solutions for delivering this capacity cost-effectively while creating thousands of highly skilled jobs in the process. “It is vital that we build from where we are which is why RIA is pleased to see a strong focus on leveraging existing plans on land and approvals that exist which can help accelerate development. We look forward to the Government’s response to the proposals alongside further details of the long-term infrastructure strategy.”

Today RIA has set out its key policy ‘asks’ as part of its Autumn 2024 submission to HM Treasury ahead of the Budget on 30 October. Commenting on the submission, RIA Chief Executive Darren Caplan said: “The Railway Industry Association and our members acknowledge that the Government is having to make difficult decisions ahead of the Budget on 30 October. "However, as we say in our submission, we would urge Chancellor Rachel Reeves to see UK rail as an investment in the economy rather than just a cost, supporting jobs, GVA, Treasury revenues and as an enabler of growth in other sectors. “Boosting the railway network is crucial to the economy, local growth, decarbonisation and providing social value to communities around the country."
