The RASE Farm of the Future Award was established to promote and celebrate the trailblazers of agriculture in England, whose efforts are leading the way to establish agricultural systems which are producing nutritious food, benefiting the environment and are economically sustainable. David Brass – winner of the 2024 RASE Farm of the Future Award – has demonstrated throughout his farming career that being willing to follow the evidence and develop new ways of doing things can bring benefits for productivity, animal welfare and the environment. Along with his wife, David has grown their free range egg business from selling eggs from an honesty box to keeping 130,000 free range and organic hens on their own farm, as well as building a successful free range packing business – The Lakes Free Range Egg Company. Do you or someone you know have a similar story to tell? Nominations for the 2025 Farm of the Future Award are now open. Diesel-powered machinery—once the backbone of agriculture—is facing mounting costs and potential regulatory pressure. But how can farms realistically transition to cleaner fuels without compromising performance? This case study, based on insights shared by Neil Tierney in a recent Farm of the Future webinar, looks at how HyKit and JCB are making refueling a hydrogen internal combustion engine as easy as a diesel refuel. What’s next for farm fuels? 🚜🔋 For over a century, diesel has powered British agriculture. But with the push for net-zero emissions, the sector faces a challenge: how do we transition away from red diesel without compromising efficiency and cost-effectiveness? Shifting to new fuels isn’t as simple as swapping out a tractor engine. Seasonality, infrastructure, and energy demands all pose hurdles that must be tackled. A recent Farm of the Future webinar explored what this transition could look like, featuring industry experts discussing: ✅ The viability of hydrogen and biomethane as scalable solutions ✅ The infrastructure challenges for rural farms ✅ How on-farm fuel generation could offer energy independence So, what’s the next step? Share your thoughts in the comments and read more in our latest blog ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e5NPyKkb #FarmFuels #Hydrogen #Biomethane #RASE #NetZero Alistair Walshaw Kit Franklin Neil Tierney Harper Adams University HyKit JCB

Last year Angus Gowthorpe from Approach Farm in Yorkshire received the inaugural RASE Natural Capital Award. Angus’s farming practices maintain or improve the natural assets above and below ground on the land that is farmed. Regenerative farming practices such as direct drilling have enabled a reduction in labour requirement, which was needed for the viability of the farm business. The mob grazing of cattle enables low-input production, which supports the arable enterprise via improvements to soil health and build-up of carbon. He has also selected options from Countryside Stewardship and SFI that have increased the biodiversity on the farm, while fitting with the farming operations. The RASE Natural Capital Award celebrates farmers striking the balance between sustainable agricultural practices, ecological enhancements and financial resilience. Does this sound like you or someone you know?
