About us

Runnymede Borough Council supports a population of around 90,000 residents in north Surrey. We cover a stretch of beautiful countryside to the west of London, with a handful of large towns - Addlestone and Chertsey in the south, and Egham in the north. With strong rail links to London and the rest of the South East, Runnymede is a thriving and prosperous borough that welcomes many commuters, visitors and tourists every day. We are proud to be the home of Magna Carta, and the beautiful Runnymede fields and Pleasure Grounds. Through our policies and activities, the Council aims to improve our economy, enhance our environment, develop our organisation to be efficient and effective, and to support local people. We take a pro-business approach and have a portfolio of commercial properties which provide an income stream to support public services. Our residents enjoy the lowest council tax in Surrey, along with some of the best and most wide-ranging additional services. Our officers are supported in their work by continuous training, collaborating on projects, and flexible work policies. We place our residents at the heart of all we do. • Congratulations to everyone involved in our Civic Awards, which were a real success again this year. Huge credit goes to our small staff team who organise the event and make it such a great celebration. This work is all carried out in addition to people’s daily duties. Their contribution speaks to the culture we are creating here at Runnymede, where our people take pride in their work and being a part of a successful and community-minded borough. Well done to all involved.

So proud to lead on the delivery of the Runnymede Civic Awards 2025 - now in it's 3rd year and continues to grow (we are going to need a bigger room)! Once again we filled the room with some of the most wonderful and talented people of Runnymede in recognition of their fantastic contributions to the community. The emotional and humbling ceremony which is filled with laughter and a few tears is the culmination of months of planning and hard work - but none of it would be possible with the support of an amazing team from various departments across the council. Couldn't wish for better colleagues who are always happy to roll up their sleeves and do whatever is needed to deliver this heartwarming event... from obtaining sponsorships, collating hundreds of nominations into judging packs and managing guest lists to creating community showcases, building stages and everything in between - it's a true team effort! Very proud and lucky to work with these guys Naomi Barrett, Kara Gristwood, Anthony Jones, Vince Lydon, Andi Roy, Daniel Callaghan, Chris Swatridge, Kate Hall & Katy McGrath Runnymede Borough Council #civicpride #teamwork #civicawards

  • We're pleased to be at the District Councils' Network conference today to talk about how we’re helping to create the environment which supports our borough’s economy. Our staff are also on hand to discuss the leadership and culture programme we've been delivering. This aims to create an organisation where everyone enjoys working and is proud to be a part of, so we can achieve the best for residents and businesses. Our Co-Leaders are also at the conference to talk about how our four co-leader model is working.

  • We’re looking forward to the District Councils' Network conference later this week, where our colleagues Ed Bowen IRRV (Hons) and Linda Norman will be talking about our Financial Inclusion Pilot programme. Recent research showed that across the UK, up to £23billion of benefits are going unclaimed, meaning potentially hundreds of people in Runnymede could be missing out. To tackle this in our area, we’ve invested in a new Financial Inclusion and Welfare Support Officer, whose role is to work with financially vulnerable residents and help them to apply for the benefits they’re entitled to. We’re using more software packages to help identify people who may be in need, and the Council has created a benefits calculator, which residents can use to calculate if they may be entitled to any unclaimed funds. • We’ve just launched a brand new corporate induction programme! The experience new employees have during their first days and weeks at the Council is really important to us. We want to create a happy, informed and effective team; helping people understand the way the Council works and how everyone contributes to its success.   The new induction programme has been created by Abigail Lowless, one of our National Management Trainees on the Local Government Association Local Government Graduate Programme. It’s part of our Organisational Development Strategy and includes input from our senior managers and colleagues from across the organisation.

National Management Trainee (NGDP) at Runnymede Borough Council

This week marked the launch of Runnymede Borough Council’s new corporate induction which I have been project managing over the last nine months during my Human Resources placement. I have had the privilege of running this project from the start through to completion. I carried out research, analysed exit interview data and undertook stakeholder engagement enabling me to design a series of talks and activities that would be beneficial for new starters. The feedback we have already received has been overwhelmingly positive. Attendees have shared they have learnt about the organisation and local government and enjoyed the opportunity to meet fellow colleagues. Running this project has been a great experience and enabled me to supporting Runnymede’s organisational development strategy. This week also marks the end of my nine month placement with HR. I would like to say a huge thank you to my colleagues in HR who have taught me so much and made this placement thoroughly enjoyable.

  • We raised the flag for Commonwealth Day today! The theme for this year is ‘Together We Thrive’. This celebrates the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth Family – 56 independent member countries united by shared values enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter. The theme reminds us of the importance of strong, connected communities who support and empower their members. Commonwealth Day is an opportunity to reaffirm our shared commitment to the principles of unity, peace, and equality. This year’s theme encapsulates the strength of the Commonwealth Family – a network of nations working together to uplift all citizens and build a future defined by opportunity and resilience.
