The National Brewer of Wales producing award-winning ales since 1882.
About us
Brains is Wales’ most famous drink. It is the toast of a nation. Still owned by the descendants of the founders who took over a fledgling brewery in a small stone building behind a Cardiff pub in 1882, Brains has become an iconic part of Welsh culture. While Brains no longer owns a pub estate as of 2020, it remains committed to brewing and distributing its legendary beers, which can still be found across Wales and beyond. Brains' portfolio includes the iconic Brains SA, the ever-popular Rev James range, and an exciting variety of seasonal and craft beers developed to suit all tastes, showcasing the brewery's dedication to innovation and quality. Brains has always been incredibly passionate about Welsh sport. Fourteen years ago, it launched its sponsorship of the Welsh Rugby Union, marking this passion with its brand proudly emblazoned across the famous red jersey. Nothing filled Brains with greater pride than seeing their logo on the shirt during the legendary Grand Slam wins of 2005 and 2008. In 2019, Brains embarked on an exciting new chapter, moving its brewing operations to a state-of-the-art brewery in Cardiff. This modern facility combines cutting-edge technology with traditional brewing techniques, ensuring the highest quality and consistency while allowing for continued innovation. Brains is proud of its independence and the way it has evolved throughout its colourful history, remaining a cornerstone of Welsh brewing heritage.

🌸 Our spring line-up is almost complete! It’s time to pack away the rugby jerseys, beers, and posters, and start looking forward to golds, pales, and reserves. 🍻 Q1 brings a whole host of new challenges with EPR, PRN, and DRS. We’re certainly not just skipping from spring into summer. But even with independent brewing being squeezed from what seems like all directions, we shall persevere and continue to push through as we gear up for the exciting months ahead! 💪 As an independent Welsh brewery, Brains will continue to collaborate, support, and assist our colleagues across 🏴 to fight for a fair playing field. Any independent brewery in Wales looking for support, please contact us. #SpringLineUp #BrewingPassion #Perseverance #SpringToSummer

From an idea to reality—Boudicca, a beer I helped develop, is now being served in J D Wetherspoon pubs across the UK!🍻 This post is all about appreciation. I feel incredibly grateful to everyone who made this journey possible. Firstly, a huge thank you to Ben Gill and Bill Dobson for giving me the amazing opportunity to develop a beer for International Women’s Day. This meant the world to me because it allowed me to take everything I learned during my Master’s in Brewing Science and turn it into an actual recipe. A special shout out to the incredible women at SA Brain and Company Ltd — Sara Leigh Webber , Sarah Todd , and Susan Corsi —who were part of the brewing team behind Boudicca. Working alongside you all made this experience even more special. To the production team at SA Brain and Company Ltd —the brewers, packers, and everyone behind the scenes—thank you! Without your hard work, this wouldn’t have been possible. I’m so lucky to be part of such a supportive, kind, and talented team. I also want to thank my professors and the brewing department at the International Centre for Brewing Science at The University of Nottingham for all the knowledge they shared with me. Without their guidance, I wouldn’t have had the foundation to create Boudicca, and I’m truly grateful for everything I learned during my time there. Seeing the beer now available in J D Wetherspoon pubs across the UK is a surreal moment, and it makes me reflect on how far this journey has come. A special thank you to Gareth Day from Cardiff and Vale College for using Boudicca beer and Brains yeast to create an incredible bread and for inviting us to a wonderful International Women’s Day lunch. It was an honour to be among such highly accomplished women, sharing stories, experiences, and, of course, great food! Finally, thank you SA Brain and Company Ltd and J D Wetherspoon for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Seeing people I know trying the beer I helped create is an indescribable feeling. This is a huge milestone in my journey, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next. If there’s one thing this experience has taught me, it’s that every step counts, and I can’t wait to keep learning and brewing!
