Last week, the UK Government outlined its plans for developing a Child Poverty Strategy. Establishing a long-term approach to addressing child poverty is essential. Young people who grow up in extreme poverty are more likely to seriously offend and have frequent criminal convictions in adulthood. Poverty is often the backdrop to exploitation as financial difficulties can easily become entry points for exploitation. It is vital that the Government invests in the most deprived communities so that children and young people can have the best start in life. Tomorrow’s Autumn Budget is an opportunity for the Government to demonstrate that they grasp the urgency of this challenge and have the compassion to respond quickly. 🔎 Take a look here: https://lnkd.in/eeHwNMjj

Non-profit Organizations
By working alongside young Londoners, their families, peers and communities, we can create a safer London for everyone.
About us
Young Londoners are full of ambition and aspiration. We want to ensure that continues into their adult lives and that they can thrive without the challenges of exploitation and violence. This is not yet the reality for enough young Londoners. Many are facing challenges from multiple avenues; be it personal experience, or simply in the places where they live, learn and have fun. We believe that all young Londoners can have a positive and productive future. Whatever their history, when a child or young person comes to Safer London, they are just that – a child or a young person. We work alongside them to help unlock their potential, so they can move forward positively. We put young Londoners at the centre of their support. Our focus is on them and their needs. By building strong, trusting relationships we gain an insight into their world, begin to understand what they need and together find the best ways to keep them safe. We work not only with them and their families, but also their peer networks and directly within the community and the places where they live and spend their time. We’re committed to learning, innovating, and delivering high quality, evidence-based support. With a footprint in every borough in London, we build trusting, professional partnerships with statutory, charitable and community partners to embed our approaches and work towards achieving our Vision.

One in every four child in London says they have been a victim of violence. Facts like this are the reason why we refuse to stop until young Londoners are safe from violence and exploitation. It is also why we brought 50 people together in a pub for an evening of trivia. What if facts like this also moved you to act? Read our latest blog post on how our fundraising evening made a difference and how you can build a safer London for young people too 👉 https://lnkd.in/euick4Zw

The BBC News recent article tells the story of Otis Lawson who was just 13 years old when he lost his brother to violent murder. In the weeks and months that followed he found there was no support aimed specifically at people like him who had lost a sibling to violence. The vast majority of services focus on supporting parents who have lost a child to violence, leaving their friends and siblings feeling overlooked and trying to cope without the specialist emotional support they so desperately need. We know that the impact of losing a young person extends deeply into the lives of their siblings, friends and communities, creating a ripple effect of trauma and grief. That's why since 2022, we have been informing a new support model for grieving families and communities that is shaped by the authentic voices and experience of those directly affected. We want support services that are tailored to diverse needs to be a reality so that communities can move forward with their grief. When you work in a sector where you are supporting people through moments of crisis including trauma, violence and exploitation, it can be difficult to know how to cope. One of our Expert Caseworkers reflects on how she looks after herself when she feels like work is overwhelming her, as well as how she supports the mental health journey of young Londoners. Read her thoughts this #MentalHealthAwarenessDay ⬇
"If they're opening up to me then they trust me, and it's not always easy to gain a young Londoner's trust." When a young Londoner is having a hard time with their mental health, they typically turn to someone they trust first. Trusted adults are not assigned to young Londoners, but are instead adults who young Londoners have independently chosen to trust. Our Caseworkers play a vital role in bridging a gap where formal mental health support may not be suitable. They offer empathetic listening and care, intervening in a way that prevents problems worsening for young Londoners. This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, we chatted with Yvonne, our Expert Caseworker, about how she supports the mental health journey of young Londoners. Read what she had to say 👇 https://lnkd.in/gQpwD3-4

After seven years the Pan London Housing Reciprocal came to an end on 30th September. Over the past seven years, the Pan London Housing Reciprocal (PLHR) has been a lifeline for social housing tenants at risk across London, especially survivors of domestic abuse and violence, offering them an alternative pathway to safe and secure housing. Since it's launch in 2017, the PLHR has seen 277 successful moves. These relocations provided 622 adults and children with the opportunity to rebuild their lives in a safe way. We extend our thanks to the local authorities, housing providers, and the incredible team who have worked tirelessly on the PLHR over the past seven years. We'd also like to thank Mayor's Office for Policing And Crime (MOPAC), the PLHR's funder, for their unwavering support since 2017. The words "it's the unfairness and everything that's been taken away from you and in such a violent way. It's very very different" describes the long-term and multifaceted nature of violent murder. The startling reality is that those affected by losing someone to youth violence are left feeling overlooked and forgotten by support services - making it hard for them to recover from their grief. Six months on from our learning research event, we have set recommendations for what a bereavement service should look like, based on listening to the stories of families, peers and communities directly affected by youth violence related murder. By transforming bereavement services into consistent, sensitive and specialist support, bereaved families and communities can move forward with their grief. A huge thank you to Peter Fonagy's research team Elizabeth Simes, PhD, Sophie Wallace-Hanlon and Chloe Campbell for their evaluation, guidelines and support throughout the research's development. This research wouldn't have been possible without the specialist bereavement support from Nneka O. seconded from Child Bereavement UK and the UCL Psychoanalysis Unit. The biggest thank you goes to Karen Stewart Green for her unwavering dedication to this project and for sharing her story. She has been the driving force behind the project, spearheading the research from the start. We don't just want to talk about change - we want to see it happen.
