We ensure that survivors of modern slavery who we support are involved in shaping the help they receive. While British survivors are the second most common nationality among the people we support, many of the residents in our safe houses are from other countries. They are often deceived or coerced into exploitation in the UK by criminals who prey on them and their families. We believe that maintaining a connection to home and loved ones is crucial in helping survivors regain their sense of identity and build the confidence and skills to move forward. That’s why we collaborate with survivors to shape both their support from us and the environments they live in—whether through staff recruitment, service improvements, or even the design of safe houses. In some homes, this has meant incorporating world murals, country flags and clocks displaying the time in each resident’s home country, helping to provide comfort and a sense of belonging. Learn more about how together we are creating spaces that offer more than just safety—spaces that help survivors heal, rebuild, and look towards a brighter future: https://brnw.ch/21wRh22

  • "I joined the company in 2012 as a part time support worker. It was really interesting work and I learned a lot - residents were not the only ones becoming transformed, I was too. Management was not on my radar, I was just determined that disadvantaged residents should be given the best chances. It was important to me that as a team we all understood there were no wrong answer, that everyone’s thoughts and opinions were valuable, we were all different but all wonderful in our own ways. Advice I would give to women wanting leadership positions – believe in yourself, work with your strengths, don’t give up, push through the hard times and celebrate having a goal worth achieving, and make sure you have a great team around you. I think International Women’s Day, celebrating women’s achievement is great and hopefully an inspiration to others." Beverley Burrows- Service Manager #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction.

  • "I have had a female manager for 3/4 of my career. Arguably I have thrived best in these roles, that is not to say my male bosses were unsupportive but nearly every promotion I received was under female management. When I started my career, I was under the illusion that success looked like an elder male, wearing a suit and tie using really big words. However, I was wrong. Success comes in all shapes and sizes and the only prerequisite is an environment to grow and develop and the support of a good manager. In the earlier days, I once applied for an internal role in a different department with a male Head of Department, some of the feedback from the interview was that I lacked gravitas. That word itself has male connotations. I wondered how I could ever appear bigger, physically and metaphorically and compete with male rivals. I eventually realised I didn’t need to; I was competent and the women around me saw this and gave me opportunities to develop. Without female bosses, I don’t think I would have the career I have had. Women grow stronger when they uplift one another, and inspiring others is a true privilege." Sam Stewart- Executive Director Of Finance and ICT #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction.

  • "As someone who is 'young' and neurodiverse, I have had numerous challenges and have been told frequently that I am too young to go into management. My advice to other women aspiring to get into leader positions is don't give up and keep going, you are all as amazing as you think you are. International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate all our differences, regardless of what role or where you are in life 🙂. Workplaces should encourage those women who are unsure, and provide training to enhance more women leaders!" Chloe McDonald- Complaints Resolution & Disrepair Manager #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction.
