The World's Most Awarded Ad School

About us

School of Communication Arts is a social enterprise, supported by over 100 agencies. Some agencies donate money to fund scholarships. Some donate time, by sending their staff down to the school to mentor in our studio. Some do both, and much more. The result is that about a third of our 36 students benefit from industry funded scholarships, and we have a network of over 700 teachers. On a typical day (if there is such a thing at SCA!) over half a dozen industry professionals visit our studio to mentor our students. The curriculum is delivered through a sequence of briefs. Students work on about fifty briefs during their time in the studio (September to July). Many of these are live briefs. After a year of hard work, our students are ready for employment, they have a great portfolio and an enviable network of industry professionals. Instead of a dissertation, we end the year with an event called Portfolio Day, where we invite our network of agencies to come and see our students’ work and make job or placement offers. Almost all students get about six months of placements from Portfolio Day, except those who go straight into employment. About 80% of our students get a job at a Top 100 agency within six months of completing the course. If you are interested in becoming a Mentor, please visit our website - we're alway keen to have new people aboard.

  • Louise Sloper is the best! She's teaching the power of typography to our Creative Mastery cohort today in the metaverse. In the real world, there was an election happening. So, Louise ran a fantastic workshop using political messaging as a platform for discussion. We met in the White House. I am inspired by the next-level teaching that our faculty deliver. Find out more about Creative Mastery here and sign-up for the February cohort. https://lnkd.in/e8eH8y5v

  • Will you help save the School of Communication Arts?

Will you help save the School of Communication Arts? It’s a bittersweet start to the school year at SCA. Our new cohort is as talented as ever—bonding well, showing incredible promise, and reminding me why this is the best portfolio school in the world. I’m confident we’ll soon send another group of exceptional graduates into the industry. But with four fewer agencies able to support us this year, our finances are wobbling. If the industry doesn’t rally, this could be our final year offering scholarships and bursaries. We are the last portfolio school in the country, and without support, it’s not just us who lose—it’s the whole industry. Our website celebrates the sponsors who’ve kept us alive for 15 years. These companies have funded over 100 scholarships, helping us change hundreds of lives. Their generosity is why our alumni over-index as winners at D&AD, British Arrows, and other awards. Ironically, Campaign UK’s Tony Cullingham Award, named for a teacher who also felt abandoned by the industry, is exclusively represented by SCA alumni. We’re not a charity; we give back to the industry with a reciprocity that benefits everyone. In a world of mergers and tightening budgets, we’ve lost some sponsors, and I get it—when things get tight, we can seem like an obvious cut. But that’s a mistake. We are the last pipeline of top talent, and the industry can’t afford to lose it. Our guiding star is RECIPROCITY—everyone gains by doing good together. Here’s what sponsorship provides: • Exclusive access to our students during school and for six months after graduation. • Year-round engagement through live briefs, feedback, and student development tracking. • Access to our alumni network at all career levels, with no charge for introductions. • A learning library, available on demand. • Talks from eminent speakers who visit the school. • Custom courses designed for sponsors, often at little or no cost. Sponsorship levels are £1k, £2k, and £3k per month, with increasing benefits. Can your company step in to replace the support we’ve lost? If you can, I’d love to hear from you. And if not, please consider sharing this so others can see how they can help keep the last portfolio school running.

RIGHT NOW WE ARE 80% OF THE WAY THROUGH 2024 ---- Time flies by. Everyone is so busy and everyone wants everything now. Yesterday. Faster if possible. That's so much pressure for anyone to cope with and it's not sustainable. But we feel pangs of guilt if we aren't delivering the goods, even if the odds were stacked against us. Very often, this system prehibits us from thinking about our future and how our growth as people can help everyone around us. What if you could use the final 20% of the year to think about how you want to succeed in all your goals next year? Would any of those goals include ambitions to learn new skills, aquire new knowledge, or get coached in how to bring your full potential to your work? If so, Creative Mastery is a FREE, part-time, degree-level course in which every learner chooses their own life coach, who sticks with them the whole time, alongside an assembly of experienced mentors and teachers. We've got three cohorts starting in February; – Thursday afternoons – Thursday evenings – Saturday mornings If you want; – Your own lifecoach – All the key SCA workshops and classes – The chance to impress your bosses and clients by applying what you learn to your job, almost from the start Then reserve your FREE space ASAP. The School will post a link in the comments. Please share with anyone who might benefit.

This has really helped me, so maybe it will help you. A while back, I backed this thing called PLAUD.AI on Kickstarter. The first version is a bit like a credit card, and it sticks to the back of your phone by magnet. You can record meetings and calls (ASK PERMISSION!). It turns these into meeting notes, using GPT and Claude. I use it in most student meetings, sending really good notes to them afterwards, and those notes sit in the students' file so that I can track our meetings over the year. I use it in Zoom calls, and I use it to record some masterclasses at the school. Although Plaud is excellent and makes everything easy, you don't need to buy any hardware to do this. • Use your phone to record the meeting • Drag the MP3/WAV file into ChatGPT • Prompt it to turn your meeting into notes Plaud also turns meeting and classes into mind-maps, which is really helpful for some of my students. It does it all so effortlessly, it feels like something Apple would offer as an accessory. I wouldn't want to discourage my students from taking notes by hand, because of the proven benefits from writing things down. But I would encourage every student to also call on the services of an AI assistant to also take notes. One smart student told me that they have prompted AI to take these notes and create flash cards to reinforce learning. Here's a link to Plaud. I've got the first version (of course!) but they've branched out into jewelery and other designs. https://uk.plaud.ai/

Our new cohort School of Communication Arts 2.0 will be pitching their videos this afternoon. What will the 24/25 cohort be called? That's up to you. Follow the cohort on their TikTok channel to watch the pitch videos when they drop later today.

Tomorrow afternoon, something special is happening on the students' TikTok channel! Our current cohort of students will be pitching their ideas for what they want their agency to be called this school year. It’s a big tradition here at SCA, with past names like M.O.S.H., Spank, Busk, and Love Thy Labour – each one with its own story and style. This year’s students have something new up their sleeves, and they need your help to decide the winning name. 🤩 Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ Follow our students' TikTok channel ( https://lnkd.in/eUZ32-Pj ). 2️⃣ Watch the videos tomorrow afternoon. 3️⃣ Show your love by liking, commenting, and voting for your favourite! Your engagement decides which name comes out on top, and trust me – you won’t want to miss this year’s creativity! Keep an eye out for the link – and we’ll see you on TikTok! 👀📲 #CreativeAgency #SCA2024 #TikTokChallenge #CreativeCommunity
