  • In the run up to #MothersDay this Sunday, we’re taking a moment to honour inspirational mum’s like Azade, who have fled violence and persecution and are building better, safer lives for themselves and their children here in Scotland. Azade fled Iraq to escape forced marriage to a much older man. She met her partner Rebin after arriving in Scotland in search of safety. But strict asylum rules prevented the couple from living together, even after Azade became pregnant. Our Refugee Support Service made sure Azade was getting the help she needed and worked closely with lawyers to push for Rebin to be allowed to join her in her asylum accommodation. The pair are now living happily together with their baby daughter and all three are settling into family life. You can read Azade's story of strength and resilience here: https://lnkd.in/eQJFGqD5

    • "I had to leave Iraq because my life was not safe there. My stepmother and brothers were treating me really badly. They wanted to force me to marry a man who was 60 years old. I had to run away."

21-year-old Azade came to Scotland in search of safety after fleeing persecution and forced marriage
    • "It was a very hard time when me and my husband had to live separately. I was feeling scared, stressed and anxious as any pregnant woman would be. It’s so hard to have a baby on your own."

Azade met her partner Rebin here in Scotland. She became pregnant but they were kept apart by the asylum system
    • "My Scottish Refugee Council caseworker is always there for me and has given me so much support. I can’t give her enough credit. Whenever I need something, I can always rely on her."

Our Refugee Support Service helps families and pregnant women on every step of their asylum journey
    • "It was a great feeling when we heard we could live together. When I had my baby, my husband was with me in the hospital. I would not have been able to cope or go through it without him by my side."

We worked closely with Azade’s lawyers to push for her and her partner Rebin to be able to live together
    • "Everything is going great. We have our wee girl and we are living very happily together. She is so cute and we love her so much! I’m getting used to being a mum. I feel like I’m supported and have everything I need."

Azade, Rebin and their baby girl are all happy, healthy and settling into family life together
