Down to earth sustainable architects who support clients to act kindly and build mindfully.
About us
We are down to earth sustainable architects who support clients to act kindly and build mindfully. We donʼt want projects to cost the earth or their well being. Silvan (or “sylvan”, from the Latin silvanus) means “consisting of or abounding in woods or trees”. We approach all projects as ecosystems, just like a woodland. A habitat that conserves and produces energy, manages waste, produces food, and a vibrant community of living things where stories happen. With mindful consumption and intelligent design, we do more with less and make spaces work hard. Everything is unique to our clientʼs neck of the woods. We are members of the Green Register and a Certified Passive House Designer.

We are completely chuffed to be a finalist in this year’s Bath Property Awards, in the Architect and Sustainability categories! 🎉 Being shortlisted alongside such talented companies is a testament to the growing demand for thoughtful, responsible construction and good business ethics. 📣 We would like to use the awards as a platform for discussing over-consumption in the construction industry worldwide. We advocate for BUILDING LESS, but designing well and being clever. 🌍🏡 Thank you to our amazing clients, consultants, contractors and collaborators, and to the Bath Property Awards for this recognition. Excited to celebrate with everyone at the awards! 🙌 #buildless #sufficiencythenefficiency #BathPropertyAwards #SustainableArchitecture #HealthyBuildings #EcoFriendlyDesign #ArchitectureForTheFuture

Join us and More Trees for Bath and North East Somerset for Great Big Green Week from 8th to 16th June 2024, we are offering ten free 1 hour consultations through June and July, focusing on a mindful approach to building. Our design process follows the RIBA Plan of Work and usually starts at Stage 1 where we gather what we need about your project and brief. Our new Stage -1 Take Root Consultation: - Gives back by planting trees. - Provides a pause to think carefully about what you want to achieve, in order to build sustainably. How does it work? We waive our initial consultation fee (usually £130), and all we ask is that you make a minimum £50 donation to local Bath charity @moretreesbanes 🌳 £50 = 10 trees Your project needs to fit our eligibility https://lnkd.in/ePukjXfs

Money doesn't grow on trees. So how much does it actually cost to build an extension in Bath in 2024? We answer the question in our most in-depth and requested blog yet. Read the full article (and find out how you can make savings) via https://lnkd.in/eRv7FyBr , but here's a quick summary: 1. An architect helps to manage your budget, which needs to cover the build cost - approx 70% - and all other associated costs such as approvals, design, surveys, contingency, and of course VAT - all these vary depending on your project, but usually approx 30%. 2. The build cost (before VAT) in Bath for a single storey extension is similar to London, at about £2,900-£3,600 per square meter. 3. Therefore a 20sqm extension build cost should be about £60k... 4...But you also need to factor in works to the existing house, about another £50k in this case, including a new kitchen. 5. Which gives us a total net build cost of £110,000. 6. And we would advise a total budget of around £160,000.
