Slough Borough Council has renewed its commitment to those who serve or have served in the armed forces with the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant. The covenant was officially signed by Councillor Dexter Smith, leader of the council, Councillor Neel Rana, the council’s Armed Forces Champion and Wing Commander Stephen Fry from the Royal Air Force on behalf of the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Councillor Neel Rana, Armed Forces Champion, said after signing the covenant: "As Armed Forces Champion, I have long been committed to ensuring service personnel, veterans, and their families receive the recognition and support they deserve. "My motion to Full Council, which passed unanimously last year, laid the foundation for today’s signing ceremony – reinforcing this council’s commitment to enhancing our support for the armed forces community. "The pledge we have signed today acknowledges our vital role not only as a public authority serving the community but also as an employer of veterans, reservists, cadets, and service spouses and partners. "By affirming this covenant, we honour their dedication and sacrifice while taking meaningful steps to improve opportunities, strengthen support networks, and ensure fair treatment. "I look forward to working both within the council and with our external partners to deliver on these commitments and continue building strong ties between Slough and the armed forces.” Councillor Dexter Smith, leader of the council, added: “Slough Borough Council is proud to underscore its commitment to the Armed Forces Community through the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant. "Today’s signing is more than a symbolic gesture – it marks a significant step in strengthening Slough’s role as a welcoming and supportive place for those who serve, have served, and their families. "I am pleased to have worked alongside my colleague, Councillor Neel Rana, in bringing this important pledge to fruition and commend his continued dedication to championing this vital cause." About us
Slough Borough Council is the local authority for the Borough of Slough, in the South East England Region of the United Kingdom. Our population of around 155,000 is young, growing and dynamic. We have the most diverse community in the country outside of London, which has welcomed communities from across the country and across the world for decades. Slough is an economic success story; we have more corporate headquarters in our town than the whole of Scotland, Wales and Northern Island put together and a thriving economy. In 2017, 2018 and 2019, Glassdoor named Slough as the best place to work in the UK; a rating based on hiring opportunities, the cost of living and employee satisfaction. Slough is changing and the pace of change has never been faster. A joint venture between the council and Morgan Sindall Investments, Slough Urban Renewal, is ploughing investment into housing, civic buildings, leisure and schools. We are investing more than £50million in new and refurbished leisure facilities across the borough including a new leisure centre and family activity centre, completely rebuilt Ice Arena and refurbished Langley Leisure Centre. It's location, location, location here in Slough. With main line rail into London Paddington in just 15 minutes, easy access to the M4, M40 and M25, Heathrow on our doorstep and Crossrail, Slough is best place for business, living and leisure.

Slough Borough Council’s former headquarters, St Martin’s Place, has been put up for sale. The site is on the corner of Bath Road and Montem Lane and was the council’s headquarters for more than 12 years. The site has been unoccupied since 2020, when the last staff moved out due to the pandemic and includes a three storey building, with substantial surface level and underground parking. Formal offers are now being invited through the council’s partner Avison Young │ UK. The listing forms part of the council’s programme of asset sales which is designed to dispose of land, buildings and other holdings which the council no longer needs; gaining best value both financially and for communities. Currently St Martins Place is costing the council more than £500,000 a year in business rates, security and upkeep. However, the property offers an excellent opportunity either in its’ current form, or for redevelopment into a variety of uses to complement the adjacent modern offices and brand new residential development to the south. Councillor Dexter Smith, leader of the council, said: “Since the council moved to Observatory House in 2019 and then following the pandemic and the financial challenges, there has been much discussion on the future of both Observatory House and St Martin’s Place and whether either had a future as a council building. “Now we have taken the decision St Martin’s Place is surplus to our requirements and it has gone on the open market. “As with all our assets, we will be looking at getting the best value in terms of a financial return but also what brings most benefits to local people.” The details of the sale, timelines and site maps can be found at https://lnkd.in/ex_3MX65

Slough Borough Council has today, (27 November 2024), published an independent peer review into the council’s commitment, planning and actions relating to equalities, diversity and inclusion in the organisation and the town. The report, from the Local Government Association (LGA) who visited the town in September following an invitation from the council, lays out the authority’s strengths and weaknesses in the areas of customer care, its own workforce and its delivery against equalities objectives. The review – completed by both senior officers and elected members appointed by the LGA – was asked to assess the council as part of its improvement journey and so its findings could be fed into the current creation of what is known as a target operating model (TOM) for the future ways of working for the council and its services. Will Tuckley, chief executive, said: “Considering Slough’s make up, equalities, diversity and inclusion has not been high enough on the priorities, and our actions, planning and services need to reflect the commitment we all have. “The council has been through a period of intense change, change that has not always been positive, nor which has had inclusiveness at its core. “With this report, with our commitment as highlighted in the report, and with our continued journey of improvement, we will be taking actions both big and small to provide reassurance to our staff, our partners and our residents, showing Slough is a place for all and that our shared dedication to the town binds us together.” Councillor Dexter Smith, leader of the council, said: “Slough is a place which has been, and continues to be, built on people coming here from across the country and across the world to find good jobs. “Slough is known for being welcoming to all, not just tolerant but embracing differences with the council at the forefront, leading the way. “In times of crisis, it is easy to take the values of Slough and the council for granted but as this report highlights, we need to do more. “We can do more and we must do more to ensure our plans, our staff, our services are available and accessible, that we talk to more people more often in ways that work for them and that our future is guided and created with our staff, our partners and our residents in mind.” He added: “We will be scrutinising every line of this report and looking at all the recommendations in detail with action plans coming forward very soon. “I would like to thank the LGA representatives for both coming to Slough and helping us make sure equalities, diversity and inclusion is at the forefront of our plans for the future.” More information including a link to the full review report can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eY2Qa_AX
