Lost Pathway to the Sea? 🌊👣 The ancient pathway in the sand behind the Crowstone at Chalkwell Beach is believed to be the remnants of an old causeway or trackway leading out to sea, possibly linked to historic trade, navigation, or even religious practices. Some theories suggest it may have been used for accessing boats at higher tides or for marking boundaries. The Crowstone itself, which sits at the edge of this pathway, is a significant historical marker. It was installed in 1837 (with an earlier version dating back to 1755) to mark the boundary of the Port of London Authority’s jurisdiction over the Thames Estuary. The pathway could have been part of an old access route used by officials, fishermen, or travellers moving between the land and the estuary. Due to natural shifting sands and tides, much of the structure is often covered, but at very low tides, parts of it become visible.
