The latest data reveals that 12.2% of 16-24-year-olds are not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). This is a rise from the same time last year and an alarmingly high level. We must tackle the causes and barriers behind these statistics, so that young people have the confidence, #skills and #opportunities needed for a positive start to their #careers. We know that #workexperience can help reduce the likelihood of a young person becoming NEET, and these latest figures highlight the importance of our mission for all young people to access high-quality work experience by 2028. Not only will preventing young people becoming NEET improve their life chances, but it is also necessary for economic prosperity. #socialmobility

It is dispiriting to see that on this #gcseresultsday2024 the attainment gap between state and independent school pupils who are awarded the top grades continues to grow. This reflects, not a lack of effort or ambition, but the fact that – while talent is everywhere, #opportunity isn’t. Regional disparities also persist; in particular, pupils in London and the South East are achieving higher levels of top grades than those in the North East. It shouldn't be the case that some young people do not get the same start in life as their peers in other parts of the country. Today’s results also reveal a drop in the number of pupils achieving a pass in English and Maths since last year; achieving GCSE passes in these subjects is essential to access many post-16 opportunities which set young people up for their next steps. A students’ socioeconomic background, or where they grow up, must not be a barrier to their future. Opportunity and high-quality education and support must be equitably spread across the country so that all young people have the chance to progress onto an exciting next stage in their life. We must ensure that every young person’s effort and hard work is well-supported by providing them with opportunities to flourish. #socialmobility

Despite #ResultsDay24 revealing widening disadvantage attainment gaps, 27,600 from the poorest backgrounds accepted a place in university - a new record and an increase of 7% compared to last year. Meanwhile, the overall share of acceptances at higher tariff universities has also gone up to 42.8%, from 40.1%. This is particularly impressive considering that pupils from state schools and more disadvantaged backgrounds face multiple hurdles in doing so, as explored in our recent ‘Double Disadvantage’ report. The report showed that unequal access to insights, information and support plays a crucial role in determining whether a talented young person will apply to a top university, and then succeed in their application. Disadvantaged young people often struggle with gaining access to this first-hand insight and information about requirements for a successful application. Whilst the increase in admissions is promising, we should be doing more to ensure students from all backgrounds have equal understanding of and access to whatever higher education path they embark on.
