The Social Mobility Commission’s ‘State of the Nation’ report 2024 reveals limited improvement in #socialmobility across the UK, and persistent #inequalities and challenges in achieving greater progress in this crucial area. Importantly, the Commission has drilled down into how outcomes vary locally, rather than simply regionally, providing greater insight into 203 localities, compared to 41 last year. This provides a fuller and more nuanced picture, and some striking details of just how much work there is still to do. Read our full response 👇

Literacy is a fundamental human right - and a crucial building block of the foundations of a successful and happy life. 📚 The impact of low literacy on life chances, mental health and wellbeing and #socialmobility is profound. Not only does it impede access to basic engagement in society - the ability to understand a job advert, payslip, news report or doctor's letter - but it impacts ability to access the lifelong benefits of reading for pleasure. This year, #InternationalLiteracyDay's theme is "Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace". We believe all children and young people deserve the chance to get to know themselves and others through the power of connecting with - and through - the written word. In an increasingly tech-driven environment, human connections and relationships will be more important than ever. Literacy is vital to academic engagement and ability to participate. It promotes compassion and empathy; and supports positive life experiences and outcomes. It gets young people ready for the diverse and ever-changing world they'll need to thrive in. 📝📙📖 #celebrateliteracy #literacyforall

The Children's Society's annual ‘Good Childhood’ report reveals the continued devastating decline of young people’s life satisfaction and wellbeing in the UK. This includes: • 15-year-olds in the UK have the lowest levels of life satisfaction compared to 27 European countries. • There is an alarming life satisfaction gap between the most and least disadvantaged young people – the largest in Europe. • Teenage girls’ wellbeing is particularly low in the UK and the life satisfaction gender gap is widening. • Many families are under financial strain, impacting their ability to provide their children with necessities such as a daily hot meal and a winter coat. This report and its national roadmap for a good childhood offers vital evidence and recommendations for understanding and improving the lives of young people. The right investment, policies and cross-government approach can drive urgently needed transformational change. For every young person to build a happy and successful life, we must ensure they enjoy a safe and positive childhood. #GoodChildhoodReport

The latest data reveals that 12.2% of 16-24-year-olds are not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). This is a rise from the same time last year and an alarmingly high level. We must tackle the causes and barriers behind these statistics, so that young people have the confidence, #skills and #opportunities needed for a positive start to their #careers. We know that #workexperience can help reduce the likelihood of a young person becoming NEET, and these latest figures highlight the importance of our mission for all young people to access high-quality work experience by 2028. Not only will preventing young people becoming NEET improve their life chances, but it is also necessary for economic prosperity. #socialmobility
ONS NEET data: 12.2% of all 16-24 year olds are NEET, April to June 2024 increase to 872,000.
