There is still time to take part in our survey on the need for a National Spinal Cord Injury Strategy. Working as part of a coalition of other charities, our goal is to improve care, support, and rehabilitation for people living with SCI. If we had a strategy, it would be a plan on what good looks like. This is YOUR chance to shape this plan! 🧑🦼➡️Should we create a national strategy for spinal cord injury care? 📝What should this plan include? 🤝How can we make sure the plan helps everyone? We invite everyone - those living with SCI, healthcare workers, families, and advocates - to contribute. Your input will help build a system that provides the care and opportunities people with SCI deserve. Thank you for helping us create a brighter future for people living with SCI. Today is an important day as we launch our campaign which calls upon the Government to act now on an update to current guidance that would require disabled children to have driving licences and insurance for their powered wheelchairs! The Using Mobility Scooters And Powered Wheelchairs rules also use outdated, offensive language, referring to wheelchairs as ‘invalid carriages’. 🌟 Meet our 2025 Team SIA London Marathon runners 🌟 "Hi, I'm Carrie-Ann Bilham and I am running the London Marathon for SIA because in June 2022 my extremely fit and healthy husband had a life-threatening accident in Italy resulting in him sustaining a spinal cord injury. James had run the London Marathon himself just a few months before and he now will never run again." "We had a 1 and 3 year old at the time and our life changed in ways I can't describe, emotionally, practically and financially. James can walk (short distances) and we're so grateful for that, we are also so lucky to have been blessed with a surprise third baby in May 2024 after he was told he wouldn't father another child." "I am running the marathon for all those who cannot do so, as I'm sure they'd give anything for the ability to do it." Thank you Carrie-Ann for joining our team and we look forward to cheering you on in London. If you'd like to donate to Carrie-Ann's fundraiser you can do so below below: https://lnkd.in/dNQeP9KU With Clyde & Co #LondonMarathon #TeamSIA #MothersDay #ThankYou

After her cauda equina syndrome (CES) diagnosis, Amy Moss, from Bristol, had to adapt her role as a mum 💖 This Mother’s Day, Amy shares how she coped with this change while celebrating her own mum and the role her wider family continues to play in her rehabilitation ... "Being a mum is life changing. There’s not another love like it. They just bring so much joy. They’ve given me the determination to get back on my feet and be where I am today." "My mum means everything to me, as does my dad. Mum was with me when I was wheeled in for surgery. She ferried me everywhere and would bring Dots to see me when I was in hospital." "After leaving the spinal unit we moved out of our family home and into an annex at my parents’ – their help was invaluable. Dotty was 18 months old by then and I physically couldn’t pick her up. Adjusting to that change in being a mum and a partner and being unable to do things by myself was hard. But during times when I felt defeated, I’d remember I had this little girl – there was no greater motivation." Amy went on to have a second child, Nola and continues to do a lot of core rehabilitation to stabilise the area around her spine since she was born. Last year Amy, and a group of family and friends climbed the Welsh Three Peaks in 24 hours! We are so grateful for her for giving back to SIA and proud to see all that she continues to achieve. This story was featured in the latest Spring issue of Forward Magazine. 💬 "Susie was very friendly and put me at ease, she didn't judge but understood the difficulty I face on a daily basis. She went out of her way to help me when I was in such a bad place, I can't express how much I appreciate it. She kept me updated every step of the way and I know in the future I have someone in my corner if I need advice so thank you Susie." It's that time of the week and today we're putting the spotlight on our amazing clinical specialists. The team helps hundreds of people with SCI every year, offering advice, guidance and practical support to both the individual and their relatives. If you need support from our SCI specialist clinicians then you can find your nearest clinician on our website: https://lnkd.in/eubaitg9 #FeedbackFriday #SpinalCordInjury

Not only are women with spinal cord injury often denied basic breast and cervical screenings due to inaccessible equipment but they also face extra challenges with menstrual health and menopause, an increased risk of pelvic organ prolapse and overall inadequate support. Why should they settle for less? SIA are fighting for change - ensuring women with spinal cord injury get the healthcare they need and deserve. Sign our petition (and share)👇 https://lnkd.in/eTCHNnkv We're also asking people to write to the Health and Social Care Select Committee so that we can trigger an inquiry into health inequalities faced by disabled women. Meet our #TeamSIA London Marathon runners 🏃 "Hi everyone, I'm Jo and I'm a 48 year old physiotherapist, full time working mum of one amazing daughter and a carer for my mum." "I became a physio because my Grandad needed a lot of help as I was growing up and I always managed to get him on his feet! My mum now needs this help as she has been recently diagnosed with spinal cord compression due to Osteoarthritis but sadly my input as a physio can't help her walk. My mum is now reliant on the support of others which she can access but others may not be so lucky. This is why I'm running the London Marathon in aid of the Spinal Injuries Association." You can donate to Jo and all of our amazing runners by visiting our Team SIA JustGiving page https://lnkd.in/eZs6J49a #LondonMarathon #SpinalCordInjury #TeamSIA
