Spread a Smile
Hospitals and Health Care
To distract seriously ill children from the monotony of long hospital stays by spreading joy and laughter.
About us
Spread a Smile is dedicated to improving the time spent by seriously ill children in hospital. We provide entertainers for seriously ill children and teenagers who are in hospital, often for prolonged periods of time, with life limiting conditions including cancer and heart, lung and kidney-related illnesses. We take entertainers such as fairies, pirates, children’s characters, musicians, magicians, singers, face painters and poets into paediatric wards, to activity centres and to children’s parties in Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College Hospital, The Royal London Hospital, St Mary's Hospital, The Evelina, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, King's College Hospital, The Royal Marsden and Noah's Ark Children's Hospice. Our aim is to divert their attention away from their treatment, stimulate their minds and to alleviate the boredom and monotony associated with sustained hospital stays. We also extend this work to the siblings of these children, as they are deeply affected by the illness of their sister or brother. There are potential additional benefits to our work. Guided by an advisory team of medical practitioners, we entertain thousands of children each year. There is emerging evidence to show that ‘laughter is the best medicine’ as it may help to strengthen the immune system, diminish pain and decrease levels of stress.

When a young patient asked for a Taylor Swift Eras Tour themed design for their radiotherapy mask, Spread a Smile’s Head of Art rose to the challenge. 👨🎨🎶 For children and teenagers going through treatment for brain, head and neck cancer, painting their radiotherapy mask can help ease the process, making the mask less frightening and the experience more manageable. The masks are personalised based on each child’s interests and requests, giving patients an element of choice and control through their treatment journey. It can have a hugely positive effect, with one Mum telling us, “My son wanted his mask painted with a space theme and every time he was put to sleep for his treatment, he would dream he was going off to a different planet. It helped to make it a positive experience and give him happy memories and he now proudly displays the mask. It wasn’t a scary mask because it was his space mask.” Spread a Smile aim's to personalise over 130 radiotherapy masks for children undergoing radiotherapy treatment for cancer this year and are so proud to be able to be there during this very difficult time. ❤️ You can find out more about our mask painting and other art initiatives via the website here: https://lnkd.in/e8u7y8hn We hope Taylor would approve! 🎶 #taylorswift #erastour #radiotherapy #radiotherapymask #artinhospital #cancertreatment #artinhospital #artist #artists #protonbeamtherapy

👋 Hello everyone! We’ve had a few new followers recently, so we thought we’d (re)introduce ourselves by sharing our lovely new film which shares how Spread a Smile brings joy to seriously ill children and their families across the country. ❤️ This week we’re celebrating Play in Healthcare Week. Every day Spread a Smile’s entertainers visit young people in hospitals and hospices spreading smiles and enabling children to play, put aside everything associated with illness and treatment plans and just be a child again. Thank you for joining us on this journey. We hope you’ll take some time to find out more about our work and how you can get involved (please check out the link below). And please do share our film far and wide so that together we can raise even more awareness and support for our vital work. 🙏 Thank you. 🥰 Love, Team Smile x PS A huge thank you to Julie (Jules) Sander for all her support and hard work producing the film. ❤️ 🔗 spreadasmile.org #SpreadaSmile #WednesdayWisdom #CharityFilm #Awareness #PlayInHospitalWeek #PIHW #PlayInHospital #NHS
