The love affair between Americans and their internal combustion engine (ICE) motor cars defined the 20th century, can the 21st century really see a wholesale switch from gas to electric? Here, Steer Associate Toni Feather explores which states lead in electric vehicle (EV) market penetration and why, to better understand how far the electrification transition has come and how much further it has to go. With rail services due to commence from Belfast’s new Grand Central Station this Sunday, we reflect on our work with Grant Thornton UK LLP in developing the business case for the new £340m interchange, which marks a significant transformation in Northern Ireland’s transportation infrastructure, designed to accommodate up to 20 million journeys annually. Pictured: Associate Director Matthew Clark on a recent visit to the city and a photograph from outside the interchange.   Learn more about our involvement by speaking to Neil Chadwick or Andrew Bennett or clicking here: https://lnkd.in/eEYX4mBe   Grand Central Station forms part of Steer’s growing portfolio of work in Ireland, having advised on the Dublin Transportation Initiative (DTI) and Luas, amongst other key infrastructure and mobility projects. King’s Cross and St. Pancras: More than just stations—a driver of urban regeneration. We were delighted to work with the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, to assess the impact of 20+ years of transport investment and regeneration at King’s Cross and St. Pancras. Steer’s report highlights the transformational impact of these iconic stations on the wider area, which has seen the creation of over 19,000 jobs and property values increase by 125% between 2011 and 2021. The redevelopment has turned King’s Cross and St. Pancras into a premium destination, boosting economic growth and enhancing London’s global connectivity.   “Steer was delighted to support DfT in undertaking this research. The research shows how the integration of transport infrastructure and urban planning can support the sustainable growth of cities and the transformation of places" Tom Higbee, Associate Director at Steer.   This project demonstrates Steer’s understanding of how transport investment can be a critical enabler in delivering sustainable development and regeneration of areas, and how this supports the central policy challenge for our cities of achieving sustainable economic growth and prosperity. To learn more about this project, contact Tom and Antonio Beltrán Arranz. 👉 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/ecJ68-rk   #kingscross #stpancras #urbanregeneration #transportation #wearesteer

For our economy to decarbonise and reach the goal of Net Zero by 2050 we will need a wholesale switch from fossil fuels to renewable and low-carbon energy sources like solar, wind and biofuels and this huge feat requires a huge amount of money to achieve it. In the UK the Climate Change Committee has estimated that there is a funding gap of £40-50 billion annually for the next decade for such projects, and here Amberside Advisors Associate Director Maria Balyasna, outlines strategies for navigating a pathway to financing this vital work and plugging that gap. Director at Steer | Rail Market Leader in North America | Strategic Advisor in the field of Passenger Rail with special focus in Demand Forecasting and Business Case

Last week I attended the AASHTO Council on Rail Transportation (CORT) 2024 Annual Meeting in Norfolk, Virginia where the Federal Railroad Administrations (FRA), various State Departments of Transportation, Amtrak, Freight Railroads and other private sector entities came together to discuss the state of play for US rail. Naturally, there were many topics of discussion at a key time for our industry including enhancing rail safety, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance, innovations in rail technology and how to prepare the next generation workforce for such innovations, as well as regional opportunities in the host state. But below are two key themes that cut through: ·        Funding: The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and its reauthorization loom large for our industry. This reauthorization would give rail much-needed certainty on funding opportunities as well as policy and programmatic changes. The election in November compounds these anxieties about the IIJA shelf life. ·        FRA CID: The FRA Corridor Identification and Development (FRA CID) program continues with exciting possibilities for planning and implementation of rail projects. The FRA and various project sponsors were involved in discussions, sharing lessons learned and progress. Overall, my time at the CORT 2024 Annual Meeting was well spent catching up with colleagues and industry leaders from across the country, looking forward to next year!
