Yesterday, we celebrated the ‘topping out’ of the new Maggie's centre in North Wales, along with Maggie's Centres and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. Designed, commissioned, built and funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation, this milestone in the build process of the new centre takes us a step closer to bringing Maggie's cancer support to the people of North Wales. 🚨 Our latest report is now live. Reading the future: The impact of literacy support on disadvantaged pupils’ GCSE grades and beyond 📚 We are thrilled to share the findings of our latest report, in partnership with Pro Bono Economics, demonstrating how targeted literacy support is reshaping the futures of disadvantaged pupils across the UK. While our work in Blackpool and North Birkenhead underscores the urgency of the UK's literacy crisis, this report reveals that targeted literacy programmes can unlock significant academic and economic opportunities. Despite the statistics that 1 in 5 primary school pupils aren't meeting expected reading standards, limiting their career prospects, earnings potential, and overall quality of life, our place-based change programmes are building a pathway to a more equitable future for all children. Key findings showed: 💰 Over 5,000 pupils could gain up to £9.2 million in potential increased earnings 📖 Pupils saw an average +0.3 grade improvement in indicative English GCSE scores, with underperforming pupils achieving a +0.7 grade improvement ✍️ Pupils with special educational needs and English as an additional language showed above-average improvement. Through strategic, place-based literacy support, we can break cycles of disadvantage and create lasting, positive change ensuring all children and young have the chance to thrive. It's full steam ahead with the construction of the new Maggie's Centre in North Wales, which is being designed, commissioned, built and funded by the Foundation. The Centre is being built in the grounds of Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire and we're delighted with how it's taking shape.
