The UK Autumn 2024 budget missed the mark on renewables ❌ With focus for UK renewal on health, housing, defence and infrastructure, Tamarindo believes 'net zero' and clean energy expansion as a pathway to sustainable growth has again been overlooked. While some concessions have been made, the budget falls short of making the most of the UK’s renowned strengths in innovation to set a green industrial strategy that could place the UK at the forefront of the global energy transition. Our Budget Highlights - Existing Commitments: - Reversal of the onshore wind ban in England. - Approval of nearly 2GW in new solar projects. - Increased budget for the sixth Contracts for Difference (CfD) allocation. - Secured £34.8 billion in private investment for clean energy. New Commitments: - £3.9 billion for carbon capture projects to decarbonise industries. - £125 million to establish GBEnergy. - £2.7 billion for nuclear development, primarily for Sizewell C progression. - £163 million to extend the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund through 2027-28. - Support for the first electrolytic hydrogen production contracts to accelerate industry decarbonisation. - A continued commitment to phase out new internal combustion engine vehicles by 2030, with all new cars and vans zero-emission by 2035. - Commissioning of advice from the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to inform a detailed Clean Power 2030 Action Plan. - Increase in the Energy Profits Levy for North Sea oil and gas. - 50% increase in Air Passenger Duty for private jets. As competitor economies (notably China and the US, but also the EU and specific member states) actively secure green supply chains and position themselves as leaders in clean technology, the UK's less than bold approach may result in missed opportunities to capture innovative global markets and support a green economic transition.
