United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) data tells us that the world is falling far behind in achieving quality education for all. Without additional measures put into place, by 2030, 300 million students will lack basic numeracy/literacy skills, and only 1 in 6 countries will achieve the universal secondary school completion target. To add to this, there is a massive global teacher shortage. We invited five of the world's leading authorities on teaching and K-12 education to share their insights on how we can address this crisis head-on. The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29) is themed "In Solidarity for a Green World." COP29 aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C, emphasizing the urgent need for investment in climate action. In honor of COP29, we’re shining a spotlight on The Journal of Environmental Policy and Planning (JEPP), an international journal that provides a forum for the analysis of environmental policy and planning. This year also happens to be the 25th anniversary of this journal, and they’re celebrating 25 volumes of the Journal by presenting one paper from each volume, chosen by their editorial team. These papers are available for free to download until the end of the year. We are pleased to bring you this episode of “How to Successfully Engage Patients in MedComms,” produced by Costello Medical, and featuring an expert panel including Emma Phillips, Sorcha Ní Dhochartaigh, Trishna Bharadia, BA(hons), MFPM(Hon), and our very own Rachel Jenkins. Rachel Jenkins discussed some of the work publishers can do to reach and engage patient audiences, one tactic being the use of Plain Language Summaries of Publications (PLSPs). PLSPs provide a clear summary of a publication using non-technical language published in a specialist journal that is accessible to any reader. Rachel Jenkins advises the inclusion of patients and caregivers as authors in PLSPs, citing data that shows: “PLSPs with a patient or caregiver author have higher downloads and Altmetric scores.” Watch the video: http://spr.ly/6040Sy9QE Read more about Plain Language Summaries: http://spr.ly/6041Sy9Q1 #MedComms #PatientEngagement The Spark Global

In the U.S. and many other countries, we are going through what some have dubbed a “once-in-a-century” education crisis, due to the historic disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. Educators, policymakers, and others are looking for ways to support student learning, and help counteract academic losses. In “Nourishing Caregiver Collaborations: Elevating Home Experiences and Classroom Practices for Collective Care,” Founder and Lead Literacy Consultant at NQC Literacy, Nawal Qarooni, invites us to step beyond school-centric, one-off events and practices to create more authentic, engaging collaborations with caregivers. Instead of asking what families can do to support schools, Qarooni asks how schools can identify and celebrate what families already inherently bring to their children’s literacy learning. Learn more about Nawal Qarooni and the book here: http://spr.ly/6049qq2YF Read the first chapter, “Celebrating Families’ Intrinsic Knowledge”: http://spr.ly/6040qq2Y2 #Education
