We’re pleased to announce that Taylor & Francis has published more than 2,200 Open Access books since we launched our OA Books Program in 2013. We are very pleased to share a new article, from the Retraction Watch blog, that features an interview with our newest publishing ethics & integrity team member, Nick Wise. Nick explains how, as a researcher at the University of Cambridge, he became interested in exposing fraudulent research. Nick has had a hand in over 1,000 retractions, and has also published tips for other fraud hunters to combat industrialized scientific misconduct. We’re pleased to announce that Taylor & Francis will now be using AI translation tools to publish books that would otherwise be unavailable to English-language readers. To ensure the quality of these translations, the team at Taylor & Francis has spent a year testing different AI tools, a process which included assessment of AI outputs by expert translators and detailed comparisons of AI versions with those produced by human translators. This new approach to book translation will bring a range of benefits to authors. Previously, most authors would have had to arrange for a translation of their work before they could submit it to a publisher for consideration. This step will no longer be required for proposals sent to Taylor & Francis in over 30 languages. With many more books being published in translation, authors will also see the impact of their work increase significantly, opening up new research collaboration opportunities. You’ve heard of human rights, but what about robot rights? More relevant now than ever before, Josh Gellers’ 2020 book “Rights for Robots” offers a fascinating exploration of the possibility of granting rights to intelligent machines. Which robots deserve rights? What rights do they deserve? How might we decide? Drawing upon theory and practice surrounding animal rights and the rights of nature, Gellers addresses all these questions and more. Perhaps more importantly, he unpacks what these questions reveal not about robots, but about us as humans, and how we relate to the world. https://lnkd.in/ewF3Btgp #AI #AIEthics

A recent roundtable Taylor & Francis co-organized with our partner the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) discussed advancing translational research with experts from institutions, industry, and government. Translational research bridges the gap between scientific discovery and real-world application. It has potential to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, foster innovation and commercialization, and it can be utilized for policy, practice, and products. In a new blog by Rose Stephenson, the Director of Policy and Advocacy at HEPI, she relates a case study from this roundtable from Andrew Ellis, Professor at the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT). Ellis observes that “the most recognisable example of translational research in recent years was the swift development and rollout of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine” however, he explains that it was another piece of research, one that you most likely have never heard of, that has truly “changed our lives.” He explains: “Whilst the success of the COVID vaccine development may have made global headlines, the work of the AiPT’s team quietly allowed many of us to continue working and to be connected to our colleagues, friends, and family throughout the pandemic.” Read what that research entailed: https://lnkd.in/eGvdgjTD Check out these books by Andrew Ellis: https://lnkd.in/euUqqTFF https://lnkd.in/exj-wcFQ #TranslationalResearch #ResearchImpact

This Women’s History Month we’re shining a spotlight on the award-winning Feminist Modernist Studies journal and its Editor-In-Chief Professor Jean Mills. Professor Mills is an Associate Professor of English Literature at John Jay College (CUNY), Chair of the English Department, and an author of two books (one pending publication) about Virginia Woolf. Feminist Modernist Studies aims to use a broad international, global, interdisciplinary, and intersectional perspective to examine feminist modernist writers and producers of art and culture through the twentieth-century. The journal offers a much needed venue for: ongoing work in the burgeoning, feminist areas of cultural and global studies; the continued recovery of under explored or “lost” women writers, artists, and cultural producers across all races and ethnicities; and new developments in feminist critical theory including feminist work in trans studies, critical Black studies, disability studies, decolonial studies, animal studies, ecocriticism, queer theory, transnational approaches, and the anthropocene, among others.
