Technopolis Group Portugal, represented by Diana Guardado, is scientific advisory board member of the CLIMOS Project (Climate Monitoring and Decision Support Framework for Sand Fly-borne Diseases Detection and Mitigation) a Horizon Europe-funded initiative focused on assessing and managing the impacts of climate change on sand fly-borne diseases, particularly #leishmaniasis. 🦠🦟 Our expertise in #policy and #engagement in health and science policies aims to be immensely valuable to the project and can significantly enhance the CLIMOS initiatives and impact, bringing fresh perspectives and strengthen the project's mission. This initiative reinforces the Technopolis Group Portugal position in international projects, bringing the expertise on science policy, in the One Health approach field. 🌍 Led by IHMT NOVA from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, the consortium is composed by 29 organizations across 16 countries. The project uses climate modeling, surveillance, and an Early Warning System (EWS) to monitor and predict shifts in sand fly populations and the diseases they transmit. By integrating climate data, environmental factors, and health surveillance, CLIMOS aims to reduce public health risks from these diseases, especially as climate change broadens sand fly habitats across Europe. Report on evaluation of environmental bonus program published: More electric cars and CO2 savings but at some cost. Technopolis Group Germany has evaluated the funding program “Richtlinie zur Förderung des Absatzes von elektrisch betriebenen Fahrzeugen“ (Umweltbonus), meaning guidelines to promote the sale of electrically powered vehicles and also known as environmental bonus, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) together with the project partner Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI. During the market ramp-up phase from 2016 to 2023, the environmental bonus should help to gradually replace the fossil-fuel car fleet in Germany with electrically powered vehicles 🚗 🔋⚡️ Good news! Overall, the results of the evaluation show that the environmental bonus has made a substantial contribution to the electrification and decarbonization of road transport: 📊 The financial subsidy totaling 10.2 billion euros for the purchase or leasing of an electrically powered vehicle for private households and companies was used for the registration of 1.4 Mio. battery electric vehicles and 800.000 plug-in hybrid vehicles. 📊 In total, almost 2.2 million electrically powered vehicles were promoted, saving 4.5 Mt of CO2 (net) in the time period 2016-23, which can be directly attributed to the program. 📊 By continuing to use the subsidized vehicles over their entire service life, cumulative GHG savings of 27.6 CO2-eq. (net) are projected to be achieved by the 2030s. Socio-demographic aspects were also analysed. The evaluation shows that there are considerable regional differences with less use being made of the funding in the eastern federal states. In addition, the subsidy was utilised disproportionately by households with higher incomes. 🎉 Exciting news! Yesterday, our colleague Mikaela Almerud had the opportunity to present our latest report, commissioned by the Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum—a leading network dedicated to policy-relevant research in entrepreneurship and innovation. The report focuses on the role of regulatory sandboxes in fostering innovation, especially in fields like AI and financial services, as recommended by the 🇪🇺European Commission in the AI and NetZero Acts. With 130 participants at the seminar, we explored how sandboxes can enable innovation by allowing businesses to experiment in real-world environments, all while working closely with regulators. However, the report also points out that while sandboxes are a useful tool, they are not a panacea for the broader challenges of over-regulation. Key takeaways: 🚀 Sandboxes promote innovation: They allow companies to test new technologies in a controlled setting without being hindered by existing regulations. 💡 Learning opportunities: Both businesses and regulators gain a better understanding of how new technologies work and the associated risks. ❌ Limitations: While sandboxes are valuable, they won’t solve the broader issues caused by overly complex regulations and the stringent implementation of EU laws. In the first week of October 2024, the General Assembly of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) took place in Victoria, Malta 🇲🇹, where Technopolis Group Portugal was actively involved. As part of the #ESPON Targeted Analysis requested by the CPMR Atlantic Arc Commission, Technopolis Group was tasked with developing strategic orientations for the creation of an Atlantic Macro-Region. This initiative aims to strengthen cooperation among Europe’s Atlantic regions, focusing on #sustainable #development and the #valorisation of #maritime and #territorial #resources. During the CPMR General Assembly, Alexandre Silveira de Almeida, Managing Partner at Technopolis Group Portugal 🇵🇹, conducted interviews with key regional representatives, including Jorge Sobrado, Vice-President of CCDR NORTE, I.P., to gather insights on existing macro-regions and explore opportunities for the future Atlantic Macro-Region. This ongoing project, ESPON Orientations for the Development of an Atlantic Macro-Region, seeks to provide #policy #recommendations that will help policymakers collaborate more effectively beyond current frameworks, such as the #Atlantic #Strategy. The goal is to build a solid foundation for an improved macro-regional strategy, assessing governance mechanisms and ensuring the involvement of regional and local authorities, as well as civil society.
