Let's embark together on a healthier future by cleansing and revitalising heating and cooling in our cities. The Cities Heat Detox starts today! 🌱💪 The way we heat and cool today, by burning fossil fuels, is detrimental to our environment, our health and our society. It accounts for almost 80% of all energy used by households, which in turn, are responsible for 21% of the EU's greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change, energy insecurity and deteriorated air quality. Local authorities have the potential to detoxify their heating and cooling systems and can make a big difference for cleaner air, a stronger economy and more resilient communities. Let's make our voices heard: healthy heat in cities means a healthy future for Europe. Join the campaign! Make sure to subscribe to the campaign as this detox journey has just begun! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/edbnNzdx #HealthyHeat4Cities #CitiesHeatDetox

🌍 Looking for innovative examples of cities detoxifying their #heat? Look no further than Heidelberg 🇩🇪! With half of its buildings already connected to a district heating network and its heat plan approved in 2023, Heidelberg is now seizing the opportunity to switch from fossil fuels to cleaner, renewable sources. The city is committed to fully decarbonising its district heating by 2030. 🔗 Let's take inspiration from Heidelberg's proactive approach. Discover more about their journey : https://lnkd.in/ecEz2gzz 🍋 In its diverse detox mix, Heidelberg has mint (geothermal), lemon (solar thermal), cucumber (waste heat) and kale (biomass), as well as blueberries and chia seeds (water-based and air-based sources), and some nuts (biogas) too! Did you know you can see what your detox mix looks like through our interactive tool? An insightful few days at #SCEWC2024! A big thank you to all our partners, speakers, and attendees for making our presence so engaging and impactful. We’re excited to continue working together towards climate-neutral and resilient cities. Let's keep the momentum going!
It's a wrap! We'd like to thank all our partners who made this presence at #SCEWC2024 possible, speakers and everyone who visited the Joint European Commission representation of initiatives and projects. You made this year's SCEWC special and engaging. A couple of facts and figues about our presence: ● The European Commission hosted presence featured a 120m2 booth and a collection of more than 20 partners ● 1 Congress sessions and 4 Agora sessions across the congress and expo area with around 30 speakers involved. ● 16 booth sessions over 3 days with a total of > 45 speakers involved. ● 20 delegations have been welcomed at the booth, covering a wide range of country representatives and entities. ● This year’s presence saw a constant/stable participation rate of 20-30 participants at the booth and 60-70 at the Agora & Congress sessions, not taking into account the seemingly high and constant traffic from/to the booth. ● The partner area offered all 21 partners their specific networking slots to have a highlighted visibility at the stand and to exchange with partners and their network. Give our partners a follow and learn more about the inspiring projects and initiatives: Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) & Covenant of Mayors - Europe Europe ASCEND Project AtelierH2020 BUILDSPACE Horizon Project Driving Urban Transitions Partnership European Urban Initiative European Capital of Smart Tourism Intelligent Cities Challenge MAKING-CITY EU NetZeroCitiesEU NEUTRALPATH project PNO Innovation (Spain) – Multimodal smart city mobility and logistics in a synchronised approach POCITYF RESPONSE Re-Value Cities Scalable Cities Secretariat Support services for EU smart communities 5G for Smart Communities Support service for Citizen-led renovation #EUSmartCities

🚨 RIGHT TO HEALTH, RIGHT TO ENERGY On 2 December from 14h15-16:30, I organise a policy event in Brussels that explores the critical intersection of energy poverty and public health. We'll share insights from WELLBASED and embed the health dimension in the 3-days #R2Eforum 2024. 👉 Registration open: https://lnkd.in/eCBizPr6 As high energy costs and poor housing conditions continue to affect vulnerable populations, understanding the health implications becomes increasingly urgent. This afternoon event will have two discussion strands: ✅ EU Policy impact: outlook on health and energy priorities Why is health rarely taken into account when discussing energy poverty issues and measures? Representatives from EU institutions will discuss the current and future priorities needed at the EU policy level to address energy poverty and its health impacts. We will dig into the unexplored areas or blind spots policymakers should consider to shape a more equitable energy landscape across Europe. ✅ Urban programmes integrating health for effective energy poverty policies Unpaid bills, cold homes, feelings of stress, shame and depression: energy poverty has many ugly faces. And it’s in cities and regions that they become visible. Regional and city practitioners will share lessons learned from working with people suffering from it. They will highlight innovative approaches and effective strategies that empower communities to combat energy poverty, enhance health and wellbeing. 🎤 Confirmed speakers: Dr. Maria Neira, Director of Environment, Climate Change & Health, WHO (remotely) Tomas de Jong, Policy Manager, European Public Health Alliance EPHA Dr. João Pedro Gouveia, Coordination team of EU Energy Poverty Advisory Hub; Principal Researcher at CENSE, NOVA-FCT, Portugal Mireia Matencio, Energy Poverty Coordinator, City of Besançon (France) VICTORIA Pellicer Sifres Fundació València Clima i Energia Dr. Lucie Middlemiss, Professor of Environment and Society, University of Leeds We very much hope to meet you (policy-makers, civil servants, NGO advocates, researchers...) in Brussels. #WellbasedEU is a research project that sheds light on the health dimension of energy poverty – an aspect that is currently very much underexposed both in policy and in on-the-ground action. Energy Cities is one partner in this very interdisciplinary and international team. #righttohealth #fuelpoverty Las Naves Centre d'Innovació Friends of the Earth Europe https://lnkd.in/ef6HFP3h
