ADHD doesn't present the same way in everyone – and that’s especially true when comparing males and females. While boys with ADHD often exhibit hyperactive and impulsive behaviours, girls are more likely to experience inattentiveness and internalised symptoms. This difference in presentation has led to a significant gap in diagnosis, understanding and treatment. For years, the spotlight on ADHD has been skewed towards male patterns of behaviour – the fidgeting, the restlessness, the impulsivity. These are the symptoms that typically come to mind, and they’re often the ones that prompt an evaluation. But for girls and women, ADHD often looks different. It can manifest as daydreaming, difficulty focusing, emotional dysregulation and perfectionism. These symptoms are less likely to draw attention and more likely to be misunderstood or misdiagnosed as anxiety or mood disorders. This disparity has serious consequences. While boys are diagnosed with ADHD at higher rates in childhood, the gap closes in adulthood when women begin to receive diagnoses at rates similar to men. This often happens after years of struggling in silence, internalising symptoms and battling co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety. Understanding these gender differences is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. ADHD in females is just as real and just as impairing as it is in males, but it requires a different lens. By broadening our perspective, we can ensure that everyone with ADHD – regardless of gender – gets the support they need to thrive. We've highlighted what ADHD can look like for women and girls in our image below but this list is, by far, not exhaustive! #ADHDinWomen #ADHD #Symptoms

A little focus test for you here.... Concentrate on the butterfly in the centre and let us know what happens to the 4 pink dots in the comments! The longer you stare at the butterfly, the surrounding pink dots will start to vanish. As soon as you let your eyes wander a little or become distracted the dots will start to reappear. 🚥 If all dots remain or you can only make 1 or 2 disappear then it is likely that you have low focus/higher distraction. 🚥If you manage to make all dots disappear you have a good level of focus and less distraction. Only 1% of people can make all of the dots disappear for more than 5 seconds! What happened for you? #Focus #Distraction #ADHD

🌟 Understanding ADHD: Recognising the Signs 🌟 Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is more than just "struggling to pay attention". It's a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects millions of people, both children and adults. Recognising the symptoms can help people to get the support they need in order to thrive. Key Symptoms of ADHD: 🔹 Inattention: Difficulty focusing, staying on task and following through with assignments. Often forgetful in daily activities. 🔹 Hyperactivity: Restlessness, fidgeting and an inability to stay still. This can be both physically and mentally taxing. 🔹 Impulsivity: Acting without thinking, interrupting others, and making hasty decisions. This can lead to challenges in both personal and professional settings. ADHD is often misunderstood, but with the right strategies and support, those with ADHD can leverage their unique strengths. Awareness is the first step toward understanding. If you or someone you know might be experiencing these symptoms, seeking professional guidance can make a world of difference. 🌟 Embracing Complexity 🌟 In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the intricate layers that make us who we are. The journey to understanding ourselves and others involves acknowledging that seemingly contradictory states can coexist within us. It's important to recognise that we can embody multiple, often seemingly contradictory, states simultaneously. 💙 Smiling & Struggling – One can wear a smile and radiate positivity while battling inner challenges and hardships. 💜 Vulnerable & Powerful – True strength often comes from embracing our vulnerabilities and allowing ourselves to be open and authentic. 💙 Successful & Traumatized – Achievements and accolades do not erase past traumas; they coexist, shaping us into resilient individuals. 💜 Extravert & Alone or Introvert & Reaching Out – Social preferences are complex; an extrovert can feel isolated, while an introvert may seek connection and support. 💙 Capable & Lost – Competence in one area doesn't preclude feelings of uncertainty or a lack of direction in another. 💜 Valuable & Flawed – Our worth is not diminished by our imperfections; rather, it is enhanced by our unique experiences and characteristics. This is a powerful reminder that our experiences and emotions are multifaceted. Embracing these dualities can lead to greater empathy and a more nuanced understanding of ourselves and others. Whether in our personal lives or professional environments, recognising these complexities can foster deeper connections and more supportive communities. Let’s celebrate our multifaceted selves and continue to support one another on this journey. #MentalHealth #ADHD #WellBeing #Support #SelfAwareness
