Today is Aortic Dissection Awareness Day. 4,000 people suffer from this each year and 2,000 die. Many die before reaching hospital. Over a third of those that make it to hospital are misdiagnosed. I am a survivor. The video explain it all very well. Spend 3 minutes watching it and it may just save your life or the life of a loved one. I was taken to A&E in an ambulance when I had extreme chest pains which subsided and I was sent home diagnosed with an esophageal spasm. 5 days later the pain returned and I was diagnosed with an aortic dissection rupture. If you watch this video you will understand just how serious that was. It is covered at 2m10s. One medic described survivors of these ruptures as 'mythical unicorns'. Anyway, survival rates are improving thanks to great work been done by charities to raise awareness. The medical resource is there to do the surgery. Diagnosis is key. https://lnkd.in/e5e55YVy

A dedicated toolkit has made it safer to be an aortic dissection patient in England today than it was before the project’s 2022 launch, but there is still work to be done, Rachel Bell (Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, UK) informed attendees at a recent dissection meeting. Addressing delegates at the inaugural Interdisciplinary Aortic Dissection Symposium (IADS; 6 September; London, UK), Bell delivered an update on the NHS England Acute Aortic Dissection Toolkit—designed to improve care for emergency acute aortic dissection patients—highlighting areas of progress, room for improvement, and future challenges.
