Updates

  • Congratulations to consultant cardiologist Dr Stephen Hoole who has been appointed as one of two new clinical leaders appointed to NHS England's Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme. Dr Hoole is now one of four members of the clinical leadership team, which also includes Royal Papworth consultant cardiologist Dr Sarah Clarke, who will lead a nationwide review of cardiology services. This will include identifying and sharing best practice in areas such as diagnostics, cath lab optimisation, reducing length of stay for elective and emergency cardiology patients, and improving outpatient services. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eDUVApfp #Cardiology #Excellence #NHS #RoyalPapworth

  • A new Channel 5 documentary, Wonders of the Human Body, includes an episode filmed at Royal Papworth Hospital. 📺 Each episode in the three-part series focuses on a different part of the body and its final episode, due to be aired on Thursday 5 September at 20:00, will focus on the lungs. 🫁 It follows a pulmonary endarterectomy, a highly specialised operation which is solely performed in the UK here at Royal Papworth, which took place last year. This surgical operation is where the blood vessels of the lungs are cleared of clot and scar material. It is a treatment option for people who have chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). The series is presented by the late TV presenter Dr Michael Mosley, who sadly died unexpectedly in June. Believed to be his final medical series, it will also feature a special tribute from his wife, Clare. We know this episode will showcase not just the excellence and compassion of our teams and our hospital, but also be a fitting tribute to Michael’s broadcasting career which he spent investigating health and fitness issues on behalf of the nation. 💙 #RoyalPapworth #Channel5 #WondersOfTheHumanBody #PulmonaryEndarterectomy #Lungs #CTEPH

  • We are delighted that Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has once again been named as one of the best NHS Trusts for inpatient care, according to the Care Quality Commission Adult Inpatient Survey 2023. The annual survey looks at the experiences of people who stayed at least one night in hospital, asking patients for their views on all aspects of their care. 🛌 Royal Papworth was one of nine hospitals to have achieved the highest band of ‘much better than expected’, which is based on the proportion of patients who responded positively compared to the average. It is the fifth year-in-a-row that our hospital has been named in the top category. 🤩 On average, patients rated the overall experience as 9.2 out of 10. The Trust scored particularly highly for privacy (9.9), cleanliness (9.7), getting enough to drink (9.8), having confidence in the doctors (9.8) and nurses (9.5), being treated with respect and dignity (9.7), being treated with kindness and compassion (9.8) and being given enough information about their condition or treatment (9.5). Maura Screaton, Chief Nurse, said: “Maintaining these high levels and ranking is testament to the outstanding care our staff provide as teams each day, working tirelessly and constantly showcasing our values of excellence, compassion and collaboration to provide the very best patient experience.” “I am very proud of their work and dedication and know our teams will be proud of these results too.” 💙 🔗 Further details and links to the full report can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eA2dfQDh #Excellence #Compassion #Collaboration #Inpatient #RoyalPapworth

  • Our EDI team and race equality network recently organised an event to celebrate South Asian Heritage month, called ‘Free to be me’. Staff from around the Trust were able to hear from two keynote speakers; Harprit Hockley, Director of Culture and Organisational Development at Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and Natasha Ramnarine, Transformation Lead for Community Services, South East London Integrated Care System – as well as experience authentic South Asian cuisine and explore an exhibit representing our own South Asian staff. Onika Patrick-Redhead, Head of EDI at Royal Papworth, commented: “The impact of the event went beyond mere representation; it was a powerful demonstration of the unique perspectives and invaluable contributions of South Asians to our healthcare system. "It underscored the importance of intersectionality in our EDI efforts, recognising that individuals navigate multiple identities simultaneously. “The stories of both our speakers highlighted both the progress we've made in diversity and inclusion and the work that still lies ahead. I observed colleagues from various backgrounds engaging in meaningful dialogue, bridging gaps in understanding, and fostering a more inclusive environment. “Reflecting on the event, I recognised its ripple effects: inspiring other underrepresented groups, encouraging allies, and potentially influencing policy and practice here at Royal Papworth.” 💙 #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #EDI #Culture #RoyalPapworth

  • We recently carried out our 500th balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA), a pioneering procedure for patients with a rare form of pulmonary hypertension. Royal Papworth Hospital carried out the first BPA in 2015 and we are the only hospital in the UK that performs this cardiology procedure. It is a minimally invasive alternative for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) patients, who are unsuitable for surgery. Benefits of this procedure for patients include reduced breathlessness symptoms, lower lung blood vessel pressures and relief from heart failure. Congratulations to all our teams involved in providing our BPA service, benefitting patients across the UK. 💙 📸 Left: Consultant cardiologist Dr Stephen Hoole (second left) with cath lab colleagues and specialist BPA and PVDU nurses. • Watching recent events in Paris we saw a feast of sporting achievements as athletes from all corners of the world and backgrounds came together to provide some inspirational personal and team moments in their disciplines. We saw a celebration of different cultures; celebrations of both individual and group achievements; incredible moments of respect and recognising the everyday extraordinary; along with people pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. If that inspired you, then imagine what working in a culture that champions such values and celebrates collective achievements as a team would be like. Enter, Royal Papworth Hospital. 🏥 As the UK’s leading heart, lung and sleep hospital we are at the forefront of world-class innovation and scientific research, but don’t let that international reputation put you off. If you are enthusiastic and motivated about working somewhere with the power for good, then you are exactly who we’re looking for. If you bring the passion and compassion, we will provide you with the tools, training and support to help us deliver high-quality results. Plus, whilst we don’t have gold, silver and bronze medals to give out, we do have a range of outstanding benefits, staff recognition initiatives and a commitment to create the best employee experience in the NHS, in a compassionate and collective culture. Chief Executive Officer at Royal Papworth Hospital

Having come to the UK from my native Ireland, 35 years in the NHS later I couldn’t agree more with Amanda. Over the years I have enjoyed diversity in roles, a rich diversity in my colleagues which has opened my mind and diversity of thought. I am so proud of the NHS and all its achievements. But most of all I am proud of our people. 💙
