London Challenge Poverty Week may have ended, but our dedication to tackling child poverty in London remains stronger than ever.   To mark this occasion, we are excited to share that we’ve received a generous funding award, made possible thanks to funding raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery. This award will enable us to expand our reach across London, strengthening our charity network and enhancing our Transforming Spaces programme. With this support, we will continue impacting the lives of 390,000 children across all 32 boroughs each year. To read the full story, click here: https://lnkd.in/ejEnZTbU

While today marks the end of London Challenge Poverty Week, the reality for the 700,000 children living in poverty in London continues every day. At our London Child Poverty Summit, we passed the mic to our Young Visionaries panel and guests to hear their perspectives on whether London is a place for young people. They shared insights on the changes needed to advocate for a brighter future for children living in poverty in our city. As we conclude this important week, we encourage you to listen to their voices and reflect on how you can contribute. As part of London Challenge Poverty Week, we are proud to share our short but powerful new film, 'Unheard Voices,' created in partnership with Home-Start London for our London Child Poverty Summit. The film shares the stories of two parents bringing up young families in London. While each family is unique, the challenges that Mariam and Eunice share are sadly those faced by so many of the families that we support. These challenges, coupled with a lack of family support services, are leaving parents feeling alone and unheard. At the heart of our film is the strength and determination of two mothers to give their children the best possible start in life. We hope that you will be inspired to join us in building a compassionate community of support around families and young people living in poverty, by supporting our work – whether as a volunteer, donor, or campaigner. We invite you to watch the full film and share it with your network. You can help make a difference this London Challenge Poverty Week 🌟 Share the film today: https://lnkd.in/eEcJktC9

We’re halfway through London Challenge Poverty Week, and it’s the perfect time to highlight the critical need for children to have a consistent, safe space to call home. Positive changes in a child’s home environment don’t just brighten their day—they can have a profound impact on their mental health and development. This belief in the power of place is central to our work and was a key focus at our London Child Poverty Summit. Our Transforming Spaces programme shows how something as simple as a bedroom makeover can create lasting change in a child’s well-being and future. It’s one of the many ways we’re fighting to reduce the devastating effects of child poverty in London. It’s not always easy, as our incredible volunteers from Keatons London know—especially when an IKEA flatpack gets involved! But every moment is worth it. Yesterday, we hosted our 6th Annual London Child Poverty Summit, focused on the themes of Places, Spaces, and Wellbeing. The event brought together inspirational voices like Kenny Imafidon, our dedicated charity partners, and, most importantly, young people from across London. It served as a vital platform for those working to tackle child poverty, fostering meaningful dialogue and long-lasting learning as we work together to improve the lives of children. Before the summit, 57% of attendees felt that London was a city for children and young people, yet many were disheartened by the reality that 700,000 children live in poverty and were uncertain about how to address the barriers they face. However, after listening to our expert panels, 73% of attendees believed that London has the potential to truly become a child-friendly city. So, what do we need to achieve this? Here’s what our attendees highlighted: 1) Safety – Creating safe spaces where children can grow and play 2) Opportunities – Ensuring every child has the chance to learn and thrive 3) Collaboration – Encouraging stronger partnerships between charities, schools, and communities At The Childhood Trust, we’re addressing these priorities through our Transforming Spaces programme and the impactful work of our London Charity Partner Network. Later this week, we’ll be sharing key findings and reflections from the summit, but for now, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to our powerful discussions. This London Challenge Poverty Week, we are breaking the stigma around the challenges young people in poverty face, working together to ensure that every child in London has the opportunity for a happy and healthy childhood. 🌟 #PovertyInEveryPostcode #LDNChallengePoverty #povertyfreelondon

London Challenge Poverty Week is here, and this year we commissioned a survey with Censuswide, asking 1,650 Londoners across all 33 boroughs about their views on child poverty and whether London is a place where children and young people can thrive. The survey revealed a startling reality: nearly half of Londoners (45%) are unaware of the full extent of child poverty in the city in 2024. That’s why your support and engagement during London Challenge Poverty Week is crucial. Until Friday, 18th October, our Poverty in Every Postcode campaign will demonstrate the extent and impact of child poverty in London. We will amplify the voices of those effected by poverty through a new film release, showcase the important work of our charity partners, share insights from our London Child Poverty Summit, and show you how you can be part of the solution. UK’s Happiness Recession: Where Do London’s Children in Poverty Stand? Recent research from The Children’s Society reveals a startling statistic: 25% of the UK’s 15-year-olds report low life satisfaction—with disadvantaged children being among those suffering the most. This is the lowest among all countries surveyed. In contrast, only 7% of Dutch children feel the same. With 700,000 children living in poverty in London, this issue is critical. Our Summer Research echoes these concerns. One student shared, “I’m constantly worried about the future. It’s hard to focus on school, and I fear my grades will suffer, leading to a downward spiral.” We also found that Pupil Premium students enter secondary school with mental well-being scores 10% lower than their peers and face higher exclusion rates. At The Childhood Trust, we are dedicated to addressing this crisis. It is imperative that we act now to alleviate child poverty and its profound impact on the well-being of our young people.
