Here's a view of The Christie you might not have seen before. The building with the gold on it is home to our two new inpatient wards which welcomed their first patients last week. The taller building next to it is our research building, the Paterson, which opened last year.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

"Jade is lovely. Really went above and beyond for my mum. Wonderful with all patients, relatives and other staff." Jade Ryan is a nurse on ward 11, one of our inpatient wards, and a recent winner of our You Made a Difference Award. She's only been with us for a year, but has already made an impression on patients and staff alike. “Jade is a caring and compassionate member of the team, helping others where she can. She always looks out for her colleagues, always bringing a positive attitude to the workplace and always putting a smile on everyone's face," her manager Sylwia says.

Two Christie oncologists were recognised as future international leaders at last month's European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Annual Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Dr Ana Ortega-Franco and Dr Jon Lim were two of only 13 medical oncologists in the 2023-2024 ESMO Leaders Generation Programme cohort. Dr Ortega-Franco’s research focuses on identifying circulating biomarkers in small-cell lung cancer to better guide treatment selection and understanding the mechanisms of treatment resistance. Dr Lim is particularly interested in better understanding the immune system to develop more effective therapies to kill cancer, including advancing experimental therapies such as novel cell-based immunotherapies. Dr Lim said: “I am very honoured to be an alumnus of the ESMO Leaders Generation Programme. We have learned invaluable skills on leadership, communication and the global vision of cancer care from the experts. What I appreciated the most is the opportunity to work closely with inspiring peers across Europe, some of whom have become important collaborators on projects going forwards.”

Over the past year, over 56,000 appointments have taken place in The Christie's local treatment centres, or in patients' homes. This means that patients travelled 1,721,037 fewer miles compared with the distance they would have travelled if their appointments had been at the hospital's Withington site. That's the same distance as travelling around the world 69 times or 7 trips to the moon. The Christie at Oldham was our first local treatment centre, and we now deliver care at 12 other locations across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Derbyshire. More 👉 https://bit.ly/3NAo4Ia

Mani Hall-Arthur works in our research division. She’s part of the contracts team, making sure they’re in place so our clinical trials can run smoothly. Mani's an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) champion and a member of The Christie’s neurodiversity staff network. She's recently been involved in Black History Month activities at the hospital, raising awareness by blogging on our intranet. “I became an EDI champion because making sure that everyone is able to be themselves and fulfil their potential is really important to me,” comments Mani. “I want to share my experiences as a black, neurodiverse woman and help and support wherever I can." Together, #WeAreTheChristie

The world’s largest clinical trial using radiotherapy to treat advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has opened at The Christie. The study aims to recruit nearly 1,000 patients newly diagnosed with lung cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. The aim is to understand how effective advanced radiotherapy techniques are in treating advanced NSCLC. Dr David Woolf, consultant oncologist at The Christie, explained: “Most people with stage IV NSCLC are eligible for this trial so it’s very inclusive. This is the first time we have delivered a trial in radiotherapy for this group of patients in 20 years so it’s a big deal. "Techniques have advanced to such an extent in this time that we believe that radiotherapy can bring additional benefit to patients undergoing their standard treatments. This study aims to provide enough evidence to change clinical practice globally and could help up to a million people a year worldwide.” More 👉 https://bit.ly/3Udc1nH #LungCancer #NSCLC #CancerResearch #ClinicalTrial #Radiotherapy

Congratulations to Dr Richard Berman, our head of supportive oncology, who won in the 'Act with Kindness' category at our staff awards last night. Richard was nominated by his patient Helen who he has looked after since 2021. Here's what she had to say about him. 👇 "When I first met Richard, I was very unwell with severe side effects from my cancer treatment. My quality of life was poor and I felt like I was coming to the end of my life. He has collaborated closely with other teams such as pharmacy, surgery and complementary therapy to alleviate some of my symptoms, massively improving my quality of life and giving me a future that I didn’t see." Congratulations to Richard and all the other winners and nominees.

It's Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) Day. AHPs are people from 15 different professions who provide holistic support and care to people at all stages of their lives. We have seven of those professions here at The Christie: radiographers, operating department practitioners, physios, dietitians, speech and language therapists and occupational therapists. AHPs are there to help our patients live their lives as fully as possible, both during and beyond their cancer diagnosis and treatment. A big thank you to all of our AHPs for everything they do. 🙌 #TheChristie #AHPsDay #AHPCommunity #Cancer #AHPs

Good luck to our nine surgeons who are swapping their scrubs for running vests and taking on the Manchester Half for our charity this weekend. 🏃 The team is made up of Aziz Gulamhusein, Omer Aziz, Panos Christopoulos, Thomas Lee, Jeremy Oates, Paul Sutton, Jonathan Wild, Lorena Martin Roman, and David Mowatt. "We wanted to do more than just talk about the difference the Charity makes; we wanted to take action, to give something back. Running the half marathon together as a team feels like the perfect way to do that," comments Aziz.
