About us
We specialise in finding and clearing video footage and still images for commercial productions. Our expert staff work around the clock with clients at every stage of the production process: from creating pitch winning mood films and treatments, through budgeting and pre-production, to on-set rights clearance and final licence negotiations - on time and usually below budget. Where we came from Founder Jody Winterbottom started out at Getty Images, eventually running Creative Stills Sales into Central Europe. He then helped set up and subsequently ran the London office of the German footage library Framepool before founding The Director Studio in 2010 as the next step in an extensive career in research and licensing. Jody has developed a massive international network of directors, film-makers, archives, freelance researchers and producers that we can call upon around the clock to meet our clients’ needs. New Work: We were excited to be brought onto this project early, working with our long-term collaborator Johannes Leonardo to help bring this film to life. This is the journey of England’s hopes and dreams for UEFA 2024. Our task was to source archival footage from Jude Bellingham’s career, capturing his early days up to his pivotal role in England’s Euro 2024 campaign. We loved showcasing how Bellingham exemplifies perseverance, embracing the support of his fans and overcoming the pressures of past disappointments to become the player he is today. The film also features familiar faces like David Beckham and Frank Lampard reflecting on their own tournament histories. Additionally, Stormzy, Laura Woods, and Ian Wright join fans in celebrating the excitement of a major tournament summer. This was an amazing project to be part of. Is it coming home? We hope so! When Johannes Leonardo & Adidas approached us with an exciting project to highlight three of their iconic shoes ahead of Fashion Week 2023, we recognised the opportunity to create something truly special. Our task was clear—find iconic archive footage that grounds the film in history and showcases the global influence of Adidas shoes within a wide variety of subcultures. We embarked on a journey through an array of archive sources, spanning decades. From vintage shots of 60s athletes sporting the initial shoe designs to candid conversations with Run DMC about their cherished Adidas kicks, we explored textured glimpses of 80s Japan, 90s New York skate culture, and the evolving role of these shoes in fashion culture. The outcome? Three captivating films that exude authenticity and genuine engagement. This case study highlights the benefits of using archive content and how seamlessly blending it with live action enhances authenticity. The workflow was a streamlined collaboration between Director, Agency and The Director Studio. Finally, our clearance team diligently handled the complexities of the content clearance, ensuring the material's commercial usability.
