The Field Engineer blog today meets Kelly Franko Founder and President of Seraphina Safety Apparel. She shares her story of founding a flame-resistant PPE underwear company for women's Safety Apparel. She also shares how she won a place at the prestigious The Juilliard School "I danced most of my childhood and thought I would be a Rockette. Although Juilliard accepted me, I grew up in a small town in Ohio. So, the thought of going off to New York City scared my parents into not supporting that choice. Since I couldn’t go to New York, I decided to open my own dance studio and teach instead". Kelly has also worked in healthcare and training. This along with being part of a ‘car racing’ family led to her found Seraphina. She sees their undergarments as the first tool women put on and the last one, they put away. Their annual Fit Focus groups provide insight into what is wrong and what is missing in PPE in their segment. They have an advantage on their team as Kelly's husband, Mark, is educated in ergonomics which provides them the additional design element using anthropometric data. For their garments, this enhances their ability to deliver products that fit all the shapes of women. Kelly describes a specific situation shared with her at the iP Utility Safety Conference in Orlando this year involving a woman wearing an everyday, wired bra while being exposed to an arc flash. The arc flash burned through her outer layer garments and melted not only the fabric of the bra, but it also melted the underwire which burned through her breast tissue into the implants she had. This released the fluid from the implants which caused additional burns to her anterior torso. Using the Rule of Nines which quickly assesses the estimated percentage of burned body surface area, this area represents 18% without accounting for any additional burn areas that may have occurred such as hands, limbs, or head. How do appropriate undergarments particularly PPE underwear improve a woman’s work life? Undergarments in general can impact the way we work. A great-fitting bra can improve productivity and confidence when everything is comfortably where it should be. If we are continually fussing with a bra that doesn’t fit right or support us appropriately, it not only becomes a nuisance, but it also creates unnecessary pain. Trying to access a bra to pull the band down, pull the straps up, or realign can be challenging when wearing layers of protective clothing that limit access. Additionally, most women are aware that their everyday bras contribute to their risk of burn injury and worry about the “what if” scenarios. Kelly is also one of the founders of AWSAM (Alliance of Women's Safety Apparel Manufacturers). The Field Engineer community blog today meets Jeffrey Addai a Biomedical Engineer and Branch Manager for the Ashanti region at Life Care Technology in Ghana. In this article he describes his reasons for becoming a Biomedical Engineer and why it is such an important and rewarding career. What is his motivation and why is altruism so important? What is it like to cover a large region as a Biomedical Engineer Manager? As well, what are the challenges and different responsibilities? "...One moment you need to coordinate the delivery of items in large quantities to a hospital, which can be very chaotic. The next moment you are in the theatre or ICU working on an anaesthesia machine or a ventilator in a very calm environment. Then the next moment you are passionately convincing a medical director to buy one of your pieces of equipment. You also need to speak with your colleagues and see how best to assist them in solving any personal problems that may indirectly affect their work. ...travelling long distances to visit hospitals outside of the Ashanti Region. ...following up on payments after delivering the equipment and fulfilling all contractual obligations. This is very crucial since a delay can negatively affect returns due to the volatile nature of our currency in Ghana, the Cedi. Jeffrey works closely with Ghana Managing Director Ing.Bishoy Fouad. Life Care Technology have locations in Egypt, Ghana, and the UK. They sell, service and support a broad range of medical equipment including, Dräger, ZOLL Medical Corporation, MATACHANA, TECHNOLOGIE MEDICALE, Geratherm Medical AG (GME), LINET Group SE, ALVO Medical . Ferno, Baxter International Inc. ZEISS Medical Technology, Erbe Group, medifa GmbH, Olympus Corporation, Mortara Instrument, Masimo and Fresenius Kabi. The Field Engineer is highlighting the UK's Gas Safety Week 2024. Don’t take chances - when you need a gas engineer, always check the official Gas Safe Register. We are sharing this post from Gas Safe Register "Gas Safe Register is the only official gas registration body of gas businesses and engineers in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey. By law all gas businesses must be on the Gas Safe Register. A gas engineer can only be aligned to a registered business and be issued with a license to undertake gas work on behalf of a registered business if they hold a valid and current qualification. This evidence of competence relates only to matters of gas safety and is obtained by every engineer through a recognised route of training and assessment (much as the DVLA issues driving licences to those who have demonstrated their competence by passing a driving test). Registration is only given on the basis of the business having at least one gas safety qualified engineer. The Register is not a membership body or trade association. The Register (and all services associated with it) is operated on behalf of the relevant Health and Safety Authority for each region in which it operates– i.e. Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey. Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the only gas registration body in Great Britain and Isle of Man on 1 April 2009 and in Northern Ireland and Guernsey on 1 April 2010". #health #safety #gas #engineer #engineering https://lnkd.in/eExBcztQ
We're looking forward to welcoming guests at the annual Gas Safety Week parliamentary reception this afternoon, with speeches from the Gas Safe Charity, Cadent, registered gas engineer, Kate Ravenscroft and the Gas Safe Register. #GSW24 #EveryCheckCounts #GasSafetyWeek

The Field Engineer Community blog today is written by Frank Pemberton a veteran Field Service Engineer who has worked for KLA-Tencor, Elekta Inc, Seno Medical and most recently BD Biosciences. Frank asks, "Can new medical instrument sales leads be a function of field service?" "Or can field service engineers feed good leads to medical instrument sales teams and potentially reap a commission from those leads? No, I am not joking, when I wrote the title. Are field service engineers meant to function as associate sales engineers? Do field service engineers help drive new sales? Is the old adage still true? 'Sales sells the first instrument; service sells the rest'. I think yes to most of the above questions". Can Field Service Engineers feed good medical instrument sales leads?
