If you're a member of IChemE and the Clean Energy SIG, please do join us for our Clean Energy SIG AGM and Clean Energy Medal presentation to Prof Christos Markides of Imperial College London at 9am UK time on 24th April 2025. I'll be telling you about what we've been doing over the last year and then we'll look forward to our plans for next year. All ideas welcome - we can incorporate requests for webinars, lectures, and visits - our last visit to HiiROC was great and was suggested by one of our members. After his virtual medal award, Christos will tell us about his work on Thermomechanical energy conversion technologies (e.g. #ORC) and their importance - I'm more used to Thermochemical processes so I'm interested to hear about this. To join, you need to register here: https://lnkd.in/eaaRZHDp You'll need to log in as an IChemE member using your username and password first. ps we're looking for a new Chair and Secretary - if you're looking to expand your input into IChemE and along the way gain useful leadership experience, please do consider applying.
The Humber Industrial Cluster Plan
Non-profit Organizations
A comprehensive plan for decarbonisation in the Humber region
About us
A total of £1.7m government funding has been secured for the Humber Cluster Plan – a comprehensive plan for decarbonisation in our region, which will show how the Humber cluster can achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040, potentially making it the first in the world to do so. This joint bid by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership and CATCH also involves eight private sector partner organisations and was submitted to Innovate UK as part of the Government’s Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge Fund scheme, part of the £350m green recovery package announced by the Prime Minister in July. The project, totalling £2.6m, will move the Humber closer to achieving large-scale decarbonisation, with businesses across the Humber working to find effective and lasting solutions for the region. The eight partner organisations supporting the Humber Cluster Plan are: British Steel, Centrica, Drax, Equinor, National Grid Ventures, Phillips 66, SSE Thermal and VPI Immingham. They include the strategically important refining and steel sectors, as well as major energy producers and low carbon infrastructure providers. A wider group of businesses will be involved in developing the plan, with all energy-intensive industries in the Humber invited to take part.

We are delighted that the Development Consent Order (DCO) for the Immingham Green Energy Terminal (IGET) has been granted. This approval marks a significant milestone in our mission to Enable the Energy Transition through supporting major developments for green hydrogen production and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in the Humber region. The IGET project will bring substantial economic benefits, including the creation of hundreds of jobs during construction and ongoing operations. Henrik Lundgaard Pedersen, Chief Executive Officer at Associated British Ports, said: “Today marks a big milestone in the UK’s energy transition journey and we are delighted that the Immingham Green Energy Terminal (IGET) project has been given the green light to progress to the next stage. We look forward to delivering first-class clean energy-enabling infrastructure for our customers to help their businesses grow.” Andrew Dawes, Regional Director, Humber at Associated British Ports, said: “The Humber is the UK’s energy estuary and today’s announcement further strengthens this role. This success is the culmination of a lot of hard work with our partners across the region and it will be fantastic to see the economic benefits IGET will bring to coastal communities as well as nationwide.” Once constructed, the terminal would be an important part of Air Products’ planned large scale green hydrogen production facility which would help decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors such as industry and transport. It will further strengthen the Port of Immingham’s position at the epicentre of the UK decarbonisation agenda. IGET is also an enabler of the Viking CCS Cluster. Suzanne Lowe, Air Products Vice President and General Manager UK, Ireland, Israel, Italy commented: “We are pleased that the Immingham Green Energy Terminal has been granted Development Consent Order by the Secretary of State. Our renewable hydrogen facility would produce up to 300MW of green hydrogen and create 1,400 jobs, and £4.6 billion in economic value in the Humber estuary. We look forward to continuing our constructive dialogue with the UK government regarding policy support required to help us make a final investment decision.” Graeme Davies, Executive Vice President, CCS, Harbour Energy, said: “This is a significant step towards supporting projects such as Viking CCS, that can help reduce the UK’s emissions. The IGET could enable imports of liquified CO₂ cargoes from across the UK and Europe, making an important contribution to our low carbon economy.” We look forward to commencing construction in the coming months and delivering this important project. #EnergyTransition / Ralph Windeatt / Ben Hodgkin / Humber Energy Board / #Humber / Air Products / Adam Varley / Nicola Robinson MCIPD LLM Msc / Stephen Rimmer / #IndustrialDecarbonisation / Planning Inspectorate

Uniper is exploring the potential development of a new flexible and efficient carbon capture power plant in the UK’s Humber region. The Killingholme Low Carbon Power project is a proposal to potentially develop a new flexible and efficient carbon capture power station on land next to Uniper’s existing power station site at Killingholme in the heart of the industrial Humber. The land purchased from C.GEN Killingholme Ltd, comes with planning consent for the development of a new state-of-the-art combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station (formerly known as the North Killingholme Power Project). Our proposal for the Killingholme Low Carbon Power project is to develop and commission the CCGT power station, so that it’s capable of responding quickly to increases in demand for electricity, contributing towards the UK’s energy supply security. We also plan to develop proposals to install carbon capture technology at the power station to remove the CO2 emissions produced during the electricity generation process. The development could connect into nearby CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure, enabling the captured CO₂ to then be safely transported to permanent offshore storage facilities in repurposed depleted gas fields. Both the new combined cycle gas turbine power station and proposed carbon capture technology could be delivered by 2030, potentially contributing towards the UK Government’s ambition for Great Britain to achieve a clean power system, whilst providing a secure source of electricity when needed. #TheBeatingHeartofEnergy #CarbonCapture
