👇📄 We support Patch's open letter on the need for speed and decisive guidance on the use of high-integrity #carboncredits.    We need to go further and faster, with both nature-based and engineered carbon removals required to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. 🌍   👥 At Drax, we're working with industry experts to develop high-integrity standards for carbon removals. This will ensure climate solutions such as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (#BECCS) deliver a real climate benefit.    💬 As Brennan Spellacy states, "We’ve lost the luxury of waiting years for perfected roadmaps, it’s time to pull out all the stops in the fight against climate change."

    Co-founder & CEO | Patch - We're hiring! patch.io/careers

Patch has spent the last several years on the frontlines with companies who are eager to turn climate ambition into reality. We’ve seen firsthand the unmatched ability standards groups, like Science Based Targets initiative, have had in enabling real climate action. But, we’ve also seen that when these standards bodies cannot move quickly to innovate and iterate, they leave corporates paralyzed. This is the problem we’re facing today as companies try to make sense of how they can support carbon avoidance and removal efforts as part of their net-zero targets. And this is why today, Patch has published an open letter calling on SBTi to provide swift and clear guidance for how companies can increase climate finance through use of carbon credits. We’ve lost the luxury of waiting years for perfected roadmaps, it’s time to pull out all the stops in the fight against climate change. You can see Patch’s open letter below and read my comment published in Reuters below.

📢 Today the Climate Change Committee released their latest progress report to the UK government. 📄 The 2024 report sets out the Committee’s assessment of how well we are delivering against our legal targets for reducing emissions. ⚠️ The message is clear: we are not on track to achieve our 2030 target without taking ambitious action. 🌍 The report recommends the need to finalise business models for large-scale deployment of engineered removals such as BECCS. ⚡️ These business models must be finalised quickly to enable projects to get underway towards meeting the Government’s ambitious target to remove at least 5 Mt of CO2 per year by 2030. 💬 Our CEO Will Gardiner responds. 👇

On Monday, we welcomed members of the Greenhouse Gas Removal Future Leaders Network, a carbon dioxide removal network of around 150 carbon market professionals, to Drax Power Station. 🤝 As well as enjoying a tour of the Power Station, they got to visit the Drax #BECCS pilot, which captures carbon dioxide generated during the production of electricity from sustainable biomass. Plus, they got to immerse themselves in our Igloo room to see the UK BECCS model in focus. 🌿 ⚡ This was a great opportunity to bridge the collaboration gap between academia and industry and to engage with key industry players in the #carbonremoval space to discuss our exciting plans to develop BECCS at Drax, both in the UK and globally. 👥 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eReNcUJf

⏰ Our countdown to carbon negative has less than 2000 days to go. Drax was the first energy company in the world to announce an ambition to be carbon negative by 2030. We are confident we can achieve it – pioneering new technology is what we do best. 🌍 We have ambitious plans to develop the #carbonremoval technology, #BECCS, both in the UK and US. Plus, we have plans to build a new 600MW pumped storage hydro plant at our existing Cruachan facility, which will more than double its electricity generating capacity. 💡 Carbon negative by 2030: Together, we make it happen. 🤝 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gGcTC3wu
