Last Friday the RSPB's UK Legacy Marketing and Philanthropy Teams held their first joint face to face event at our UK Headquarters, The Lodge.
The event was made even more special as this was also in partnership with The Royal Mint as a celebration of the collaboration between our organisations in the design of our new National Coins. The new designs are inspired by flora and fauna found across Britain and reflect King Charles III’s passion for conservation and the natural world.
The day was a huge success with supporters invited along to the Lodge to hear inspiring presentations from our conservation team with content specifically related to the key species from the designs of the new coins. We also welcomed Beccy Speight our Chief Executive and our Executive Director for Income and Conservation Investment, Andrew Cook.
Being at our headquarters, it seemed fitting to showcase some of our historic artefacts and our librarians displayed some wonderful pieces from our archives. Even managing to find an original version of ‘Bird Notes and News’ from 1938 which featured a lovely article about the Royal Mint’s decision to put the first bird, a Wren on the front of a coin. The Farthing was worth one quarter of a penny at the time with the wren being introduced into circulation in 1937.
Our supporters were also taken on tours of the reserve and gardens with the opportunity to learn more about the ancient trees and species resident around the Lodge.
The day was topped off with an excellent presentation delivered by Chris Barker, Information and Research Manager from the Royalmint Museum. Chris delivered an exceptional talk about the history of nature on coins through time and the story of how conservation and nature has come to feature on the new National coins marking the King’s coronation.
The second event we have held with the Royal Mint this year, the first in Scotland in the spring to launch the new National coins, we are delighted to continue to partner and work closely together to highlight the importance of conservation in the UK and our work to protect and restore nature for generations to come. Hopefully the new National coins are a valuable marker in time of this important work.
Congratulations and huge well done to everyone involved in creating such an amazing event, very proud of everyone’s hard work.
