About us
At the Social Mobility Foundation, we work for a society where people from all social backgrounds can thrive, and all young people can explore and nurture their talents. We do this through opening up opportunities for young people with fewer options through our Aspiring Professionals Programme, and breaking down barriers in our systems through our campaigning work, always working alongside our community. Because when we foster the potential of all of our young people, we lift up every member of our communities.

We're delighted to be working in partnership with Intermediate Capital Group (ICG) to transform the opportunities that students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds have to realise their full career potential 🌟 Sarah Atkinson, Social Mobility Foundation CEO 💬: "Degree level apprenticeships are a growing route into highly skilled careers but there is a big gap at every stage of the training journey between apprentices depending on their socioeconomic background. We're thrilled to partner with ICG to develop and grow our apprenticeship programme, supporting young people and working with employers to make the system fairer so that all young people can access and progress in degree apprenticeships."
We are proud to share our latest Charitable Giving Impact Report, which tracks the breadth and depth of our social impact during the year to March 2025. Our strategic approach to charitable giving remains focused on investing in the communities where we live, work and operate – blending financial support with volunteering opportunities that benefit both our partner charities and our people. Over 250 ICG colleagues volunteered in 2024, giving a participation rate of over 35%, well above industry benchmarks. The third year of our #MillionMeals programme has enabled the delivery of 1.43 million meals in the past year alone, supporting those affected by food poverty and the cost of living crisis. Meanwhile, our flagship £3.75 million Educational Opportunity Programme continues to help level the playing field for those entering professional careers. In 2024, our initiatives supported over 4,500 young people to help increase their social mobility. We are also delighted to announce two new partnerships for 2025 in Poland and the UK: 1️⃣ A three-year partnership with the Social Impact Alliance for CEE will see ICG provide over 100 exceptional students in Poland with financial aid to help individuals achieve their full academic and career potential. 2️⃣Our partnership with The Social Mobility Foundation will support the scaling of a degree apprenticeship programme in the UK, to help remove barriers for young people entering into highly skilled careers. 🔗Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/eUdnH3Ug 🔗More about charitable giving at ICG: https://lnkd.in/eZRG_P-A #CharitableGiving #ImpactReport #PrivateMarkets #PrivateCapital

The Social Mobility Foundation reposted this
With the Social Mobility Employer Index now open for the ninth year, employers have a unique opportunity to widen their talent pools and build more representative, successful organisations. It’s well known that more socially mobile workplaces perform better. A recent report from Co-op and Demos found the boost to the UK economy from a greater business focus on social mobility could be up to £19 billion per year. In an economy where competition for talent and productivity is everything, that’s impossible to ignore. The leading employers that enter the Index, like PwC UK, Browne Jacobson, Co-op and Amazon, have seen the benefits. They’ve gained from The Social Mobility Foundation’s expert guidance and bespoke feedback on their outreach, hiring, progression and internal cultures to become more inclusive, year-on-year. Last year saw a welcome increase in entrants from the technology and creative sectors - two industries with huge societal impact but remarkably few employees from working-class backgrounds. But there are many more employers yet to take the first steps on their social mobility journeys. Find out more and register for updates today. https://lnkd.in/e96bHa_t

I'm so disappointed that the Financial Conduct Authority has dropped its proposals on socioeconomic background reporting for financial firms. The City has a class problem. The FCA/PRA consultation acknowledged that almost 9 in 10 senior figures in financial services come from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. And employees from lower socioeconomic backgrounds take 25% longer to progress, despite no evidence of poorer performance. That’s not a diversity problem, that’s a skills and innovation problem. Especially in a sector that creates products and services for all of us, whatever the size of our bank balance. A recent Demos report found that improving social mobility in UK workplaces could boost annual GDP by £19 billion – the kind of growth our economy desperately needs. At The Social Mobility Foundation we will continue to support employers who want to do the right thing, which is also the smart thing for their business. And we'll keep pushing for change.
