The Young Foundation
Non-profit Organization Management
The UK’s home for community research and social innovation
About us
The Young Foundation’s mission is to develop better connected and more sustainable communities across the UK. As a UKRI accredited Independent Research Organisation, social investor and community development practitioner, we combine all our skills and expertise, to further that mission. We amplify the stories and lived experiences of people in our communities; using this as a spur to drive locally-led community action and enterprise. And we use what we learn across different communities to spot national patterns of need and opportunity. Then we work with national partners to support new ideas to tackle those shared, national challenges. Bringing together our own – and other people’s – work, we are building a shared body of evidence, tools and insight about how communities are taking action on the issues that affect them. We are experts in understanding the changing role of communities in the 21st century. We have a long track record incubating over 80 new organisations including: Which? The Open University, Language Line, Social Innovation Exchange, School for Social Entrepreneurs, Uprising and Action for Happiness. We continue to offer incubation support, plus office and back office support, to early-stage, innovative organisations that share our mission.

This week, The Landworkers' Alliance is hosting a conference about on-farm agroecological research, bringing together agroecological farmers and growers, with scientists, researchers, policy-makers and funders to showcase the innovation taking place on farms across the country. One project showcased, funded through the Community Knowledge Fund, pooled the knowledge of landworkers to identify what was relevant and important to test and measure on their lands, with the aim of agreeing standard methodologies for data measurement and recording. Yesterday, our Director of Research Dr Al Mathers joined Future of London at Public Spaces Expo for a timely discussion of issues around widening participation in the built environment. Her key takeaways include 👇 1️⃣ Upfront investment (in terms of time and resources) is critical for trusted relationships to flourish between design professionals and communities. 2️⃣ Participatory design approaches do not always follow a linear journey or a 'one size fits all' model. To avoid 'participation washing' they need to be adapted and evolved with the community, based on communication needs, motivations for engagement, and deep understanding of place. 3️⃣ This should be supported by capability building - both in terms of community confidence and skills, and organisational mindsets to support and adapt to community visions for change. 4️⃣ Overall, we need a move away from short-term extractive projects to long term partnerships. EVENT: Looking forward to some fascinating conversations at Public Spaces Expo next Tuesday. Among them, our Director of Research Al Mathers will explore how to ensure our public spaces are welcoming. "Subtle signs and signals can influence whether people feel a place is meant for them", Al says. "What does an actively inclusive space look like?" Sign up to join the debate 👇
Can a park be racist or discriminate against women and girls? That's the question we're addressing at Public Spaces Expo next week. Public spaces should enable social connections, cultural expression, recreation and heritage. But not all spaces are welcoming to everyone. Subtle signs and signals can influence whether people feel a place is meant for them. That's why we think that co-design is essential to make public spaces work for all. To find out how to put this idea into practice, join our session called "Designing for Diversity in Public Spaces". Our expert panel: ▶️ Al Mathers | Young Foundation ▶️ Dr Bridget Snaith CMLI | University of Sheffield ▶️ Dorréll Gayle-Menzie, Community Design Collective Member & architectural apprentice ▶️ Jennie Savage FRSA | London Borough of Tower Hamlets ▶️ Anna Odedun | Future of London (chair) When: 11am, Tuesday 15 October 2024 Where: ExCel Centre, London Register for free tickets to the Expo via the link in the comments below #FutureOfLondon #PublicSpacesExpo

OPINION 🌱 | Green growth calls for a clear plan, not vague promises Labour has pledged to ‘Get Britain Working’. Beyond capitalising on the opportunity of a green economy, the UK needs a carefully managed and well-planned ‘just’ and fair transition, writes Emily Morrison for Chamber UK. The Young Foundation reposted this
OPINION: Huge thanks to Mark Griffiths for sharing his analysis of how The Labour Party's mission-driven leadership, if supported by citizen participation, could drive social change 👇 #Participation #MissionDriven #FairerFuture
As The Labour Party's conference gets under way, I've written a blog for The Young Foundation on the importance of meaningfully involving those who are most affected by the success of Labour's missions in their design, decision-making and delivery. This isn't my own opinion, but the result of analysing over one million worlds of expert opinion on mission-led change to provide more rigour, and yield more specificity, on a topic really close to my heart: how can government be more effective at delivering meaningful change? https://lnkd.in/eNursK3T cc Peter Hyman

Today, we're at the first Outer Hebrides ‘COP’ event, hosted by Climate Hebrides. OH-COP1 aims to kick-start a whole community approach to climate action, linking legislation, strategy and operational delivery, with community groups, businesses, public bodies, schools and households. As part of the event, Climate Hebrides is showcasing its new Mapping for Change tool, which captures stories from different communities across the region who have experienced climate change challenges, to help inform climate mitigation and adaptation planning and policies at a strategic level. The event is also sharing actions already being undertaken locally to tackle climate change, helping to identify gaps and ideas for future action, and attendees are making pledges of action and commitments to each other which will be reviewed at OH-COP2 next year. The project is a grantee of the @UKRI_News-funded Community Knowledge Fund, which supports community groups and organisations to use the knowledge in communities to address challenges that matter locally.
