🚨 New Report Exposes Fossil Fuel Imbalance in the Commonwealth 🚨 As #CHOGM2024 kicks off in Samoa, a groundbreaking report, Uncommon Wealth, reveals how the UK, Australia, and Canada are driving the majority of fossil fuel expansion in the Commonwealth—despite having far less economic dependency on these resources. 🤯 These three nations, responsible for over 60% of emissions from fossil fuel extraction, are putting vulnerable countries at even greater risk as they face the brunt of climate impacts and rising debt. ⛽️💵 🌍 With climate-vulnerable nations calling for a #FossilFuelTreaty, the incoming Commonwealth Secretary-General has a unique opportunity to lead by endorsing the treaty proposal and ensuring a just, fossil-free future for all. Let’s demand action and climate justice from the Commonwealth’s wealthiest countries! ✊🏽 Read the full press release and report at the link in the comments below!

Yesterday at COP16 Colombia, Canopy and the IUCN co-hosted an insightful panel: Financing A Systemic Solution for Forest and Biodiversity Conservation. The discussion explored financing systemic solutions to transform unsustainable paper, packaging, and viscose supply chains — key steps toward conserving critical forests and biodiversity. Key Takeaways: Material Substitution is Essential: Canopy Founder and Executive Director, Nicole Rycroft, highlighted that over 5 billion trees are cut down annually for these products. She noted, "Unless we reduce the demand for paper, packaging, and wood-based textiles, we risk undermining conservation efforts." Next Gen Materials Lead the Way: Sustainable alternatives like agricultural residues and recycled textiles can replace wood pulp, reducing pressure on primary forests globally. Urgent Need for Investment: Mobilizing USD 78 billion is crucial to scale these solutions. Nicole remarked, "We don’t need to reinvent the wheel; existing investment vehicles can support this transition." Collective Action Required: Chetan Kumar from IUCN stated, "Business as usual will not do." Global collaboration is key to scaling Next Gen solutions. We’re inspired and more committed than ever to drive systemic change. Together, we can make sustainable circular material sourcing the new norm, and keep vital forests standing for a healthy planet. #Sustainability #COP16 #GBF #KMGBF #NextGenSolutions #ForestConservation #Biodiversity #CircularEconomy #Canopy

What will the future look like when we redesign outdated systems? For the IACDE Nordic Chapter's 10 year anniversary that’s exactly what a group of innovators and change-makers gathered to explore. An event, curated by Amanda Johnston from The Sustainable Angle, hosted by the Design Museum in Kensington, London. “The future now: new design journeys." A body of trailblazers brought together, A vision for a kinder world, with a common thread running through, that it’s people and our emotions that sit at the heart of these conversations. We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of this future-facing showcase, to share ideas and actions for a cooler, kinder and even regenerative world. Where transparent value chains can replace opaque textile supply chains and we ditch petrochemically derived synthetic fabrics in favour of natural fibres farmed, naturally. Smart sourcing with Papillon Bleu Limited’s physical collection of regenerative organic cottons and UK grown hemp. Smart technology and a true collaborative spirit between everyone taking part. With bureau_555 creating amazing digital twins of all our fabrics, helping designers Elliot Cano and Sam Memberry to 3D design, sew and launch the hemp coat. The debut style of brand Dark Water's low-impact capsule collection. The hero coat is made from Papillon Bleu’s Morpho fabric in Lady Jane Grey heavy fabric design, a basket weave with charcoal yarn, a textile with inherent flecks of colour adding character as softness in hand feel that came a surprise for many for a hemp cloth. Giving hemp a face lift and cotton supply chains a rethink. Developed with the recycling skills of iinouiio: Recycled Textiles with Morpho with hand looms woven by Alice Timmis in her studio in East London. Industrially woven in Huddersfield, England, embodying local textile solutions with hemp grown locally in the UK blended with wool and post - consumer recycled cashmere, offering luxury quality with low environmental impact. Igniting curiosity and illustrating how localised collaborations can really work in the real world and digital universe. Maybe we will fall in love with “cobots” who cut our patterns and cloth whilst making a mean cup of tea. Meet the robotics lab at Roll The Manchester Metropolitan University. With special thanks to Jesper Sabro Jensen member of the IACDE's board and Amanda Johnston curator of the Future Fabrics Expo for the tenacity to put this together and appreciation for including our story. The Future Now: New Design Journeys It was an honour to be part of IACDE Nordic Chapter's 10-year anniversary, participating in 'The Future Now: New Design Journeys' showcase, organized by Amanda Johnston from The Sustainable Angle at the the Design Museum in London. The event provided an exciting platform to rethink systems by drawing inspiration from the past while considering the future. The focus was on smart sourcing, smart technology, and fostering a true collaborative spirit among all participants, whether featured, collaborating, or speaking. Our collaboration with Vanessa Barker from Papillon Bleu Limited was instrumental; she provided the fabric for our jacket. The fabric, a unique blend of hemp and recycled cashmere, woven in Huddersfield, offers luxury quality with minimal environmental impact, aligning perfectly with our sustainable vision. Gabrielle Shiner-Hill from bureau_555 worked closely with Vanessa Barker to create digital twins of these fabrics, enabling myself and designer Samuel Membery to bring our hemp coat to life as part of @darkwater's low-impact capsule collection. All of this was made possible thanks to the support of David Leigh and Samuel Membery from xyz.exchange, who have been assisting me over the past year in developing my capsule collection as part of their pilot program, contributing to the research and development of their innovative services.
