📢 On 26 October, the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023 came into force, marking a significant shift in employers’ responsibilities to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. The Act introduces a proactive duty on employers to take reasonable steps to prevent harassment — not only by employees but also by clients and customers. Specialist medical negligence lawyers at Thompsons Solicitors have said they are ‘very concerned’ to learn that The General Medical Council has suspended the medical licence of the mesh surgeon Professor Sohier Elneil. This follows a hearing earlier this month in which a Medical Practitioners Tribunal considered allegations that in 2017 Dr Elneil had failed to obtain informed consent from a patient, and that she provided dishonest information in respect of a procedure undertaken. It was further alleged that in 2018 she provided information she knew to be dishonest to NHS Highland, in respect of the procedure undertaken on the same patient. We welcome the Coroner’s ruling that rogue surgeon Ian Paterson must give evidence at the upcoming inquests, following his attempt to have his witness summons revoked. Linda Millband, head of group claims at Thompsons Solicitors, who represents 14 of the affected families, says: "This ruling is an important step towards justice for the families affected by Paterson's actions and ensuring they hear all the evidence needed for a full inquest." Paterson, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence, carried out unnecessary and harmful surgeries on over 1,000 patients. These inquests aim to shed further light on the tragic consequences of his malpractice. #PatientSafety #MedicalNegligence https://bit.ly/3AktrYJ

The Government has today announced four separate consultations concerning aspects of the Employment Rights Bill. The first consultation is concerned with the measures introduced in the Employment Rights Bill to tackle one-sided flexibility in zero hours contracts and how they could be applied to agency workers. The second consultation concerns a focus on creating a modern framework for industrial relations and seeks to examine the way in which trade unions are currently regulated. The third consultation is seeking views on measures to strengthen the collective redundancy framework and protections for employees against fire and rehire practices. The fourth consultation is on the percentage replacement rate for those earning below the current rate of Statutory Sick Pay.
