Supporting the UK foundation industries to become internationally competitive, secure more jobs and grow sustainably
About us
UK Research and Innovation’s £66 million Transforming Foundation Industries (TFI) Challenge delivered by Innovate UK is helping the UK’s cement, metals, glass, chemicals, paper and ceramics sectors become internationally competitive, secure more UK jobs and grow in an environmentally sustainable way. The UK’s foundation industries are essential for the manufacturing and construction sectors and so form the building blocks of our economy. TFI is working with partners in industry and academia to facilitate innovation and has provided funding to kickstart projects across the country.

📈 First Graphene Limited (ASX: FGR) supply production scale volumes of high quality graphene platelets. By using this graphene additive in cement to strengthen it, less cement is required overall and the final product has lower embodied CO2. With funding from UKRI’s Transforming Foundation Industries Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK, EPSRC and ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, First Graphene have been able to connect with organisations in need of low carbon materials, taking it from lab scale to industrial scale application. 💡This project allowed a trial with Breedon Group plc Hope Works plant, which produces an excess of 2 million tonnes of cement a year! Passionate about creativity, I'm an ex D&T Teacher, now self employed designing LEGO commissions and workshops.
Yesterday I delivered my latest LEGO model commission to Glass Futures in St.Helens. The model is going to be taken to the glasstec – International Trade Fair .The model is of the new experimental glass furnace at Glass Futures which will support research and inovation to help decarbonise the glass industry. Thanks to David Hughes for inviting me to design and build a really interesting and unique project. #lego #commission #modelbuilder #tradeshow

The EU has set an ambitious goal for Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. For energy-intensive industries, such as the foundation industries, many of the tools needed for such a significant reduction are still at an earlier stage of industrial or commercial development. Projects through Transforming Foundation Industries Challenge have been developing new and cross-cutting technologies to transform existing #materials and #manufacturing value chains and creating new ones. Our #decarbonisation challenges are consistent across the globe so it's important we prepare our communities now to uplink into Horizon Europe. This event was the first of its kind! Thank you to all the key people that made this happen 👏🏽 🌎Anshumaan Krishnan Ayyangar MIET - Horizon National Contact Point for Materials 🌱 Nuray Tanis - Innovate UK Business Growth 🇪🇺 Monika Dunkel - Innovate UK Business Growth / Enterprise Europe Network 🏭 Abishek Ramesh (CEng, MBA, MRAeS) - High Value Manufacturing Catapult
🌍 Yesterday at UKRI’s Transforming Foundation Industries (TFI) Challenge’s Horizon Europe Opportunities, delivered by Innovate UK, EPSRC and ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council we showcased opportunities for the TFI community to drive innovation beyond borders. TFI have fostered a community of innovators developing cutting-edge technologies and processes. By focusing on collaboration and shared expertise, we are positioning the UK’s foundation industries to thrive on the international stage. This event marked an important milestone in fostering international partnerships, ensuring that the UK’s foundation industries are not just leaders but collaborators globally. We are excited to be part of this growing global movement. 🌱Sustainable Future for the UK Chemicals Industry The chemicals industry is vital yet carbon-intensive, relying on fossil fuels for both energy and feedstock. Innovate UK, in collaboration with industry leaders, has set a Sustainable Carbon Ambition. It aims to double economic output and source 80% of carbon from sustainable, non-virgin sources by 2050. The chemicals industry is working with stakeholders and Government to: ● Protect key assets while reducing environmental impacts ● Invest in sustainable biomass, carbon capture, and recycling ● Foster collaboration between industry, academia, and investors This shift will create thousands of skilled jobs and drive regional growth. Let's innovate for a greener future! 👉 Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/eykaWg4a #FoundationIndustries #Chemicals #Innovation #Collaboration #Sustainability

"It really proved invaluable to Parkinson-Spencer Refractories Ltd (PSR)” - Simon Parkinson, Managing Director PSR is a manufacturer of refractory materials which are high temperature ceramics used by the global glass industry. This process is energy intensive and requires an exhaustive amount of energy and heat in production. 🔓 With funding from UKRI’s Transforming Foundation Industries (TFI) Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK, ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council and EPSRC, the project found new innovative ways to reduce these temperatures. With support from research institutions and universities, the team successfully used additives in the firing process to decrease temperatures. This technology can save up to 15% of PSR’s energy usage. For the wider ceramics industry, it has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 5 megatons a year! ⬇️ Hear from PSR’s Simon Parkinson in the video below ⬇️ #FoundationIndustries #Ceramics #Glass #Innovation #Funding
