When we sat down with Darren Leon Mckoy, Creative Director of Dr. Martens plc the key thing we wanted to get out of the conversation was what the role of a Creative Director. Too often we think of a Creative Director as a creative talent, graduated from one of the top fashion schools and making waves on the catwalk, but there is a fine balance between the creativity and business. Someone in that role needs to understand the business objectives, and creatively determine how to reach them. Taking into account the brand's heritage, today's culture, a network of collaborators and a design team that all contribute to the final product. At the end of the day, their goal is to make the best product, but it takes a breadth of skills and knowledge to give a brand its direction.
