The importance of promoting careers in mining in the UK cannot be overstated. With the industry facing significant challenges and opportunities, it is essential to attract a new generation of skilled professionals who can contribute to its growth and sustainability. In recent years, there has been a notable decline in interest in mining careers, particularly among younger generations. As we shift towards a more sustainable and technologically advanced future, promoting careers in mining is more important than ever.
· Economic Contribution
Mining remains a vital component of the UK's economy. It supports thousands of jobs not only directly within mines but also indirectly through supply chains and related industries. Additionally, mining operations foster economic growth in local communities, providing opportunities for small businesses and services.
· Skills Shortage and Workforce Development
Many mining professionals are approaching retirement age, creating a skills gap that needs to be addressed. Promoting careers in mining can attract younger individuals who possess the requisite skillsets or a willingness to learn. By investing in workforce development through training programs, apprenticeships, and collaborations with educational institutions, we can cultivate a new generation of skilled workers ready to take on challenges and drive innovation in the industry.
· Technological Advancements
Modern mining is at the forefront of technological advancement. From automation to data analysis, the industry is evolving rapidly, offering exciting opportunities for tech-savvy individuals. Promoting careers in mining is an excellent way to highlight these advancements and show how mining professionals are using technology to increase efficiency and environmental sustainability. By attracting talent with engineering, IT, and environmental expertise, we can push the industry further into the digital age.
· Environmental Awareness and Sustainability
As the demand for minerals grows, the mining sector faces increasing scrutiny regarding its environmental impact. Promoting careers in mining provides an opportunity to emphasise the industry's commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. New professionals entering the sector can contribute to innovative solutions that minimise ecological footprints, such as reducing waste, improving energy efficiency, and rehabilitating mined areas. By showcasing these aspects, we can attract environmentally conscious individuals who want to make a positive impact.
· Regional Development and Local Communities
Promoting careers in mining is not just about individual success; it also contributes to the revival and growth of local communities. Mining projects can lead to infrastructural improvements, educational programs, and healthcare services in regions that may have faced economic challenges.
The University of Exeter, Cornwall is set to relaunch our historic undergraduate Mining Engineering degree programme!
The programme, delivered by experts from the world-famous Camborne School of Mines Association, is being reintroduced at our Penryn Campus. The first cohort are due to be welcomed in the 2025/26 academic year.
Students will study a common first year and will be able to convert to the Mining Engineering programme in their 2nd year of study.
We are also seeking to create scholarships to support students to continue onto the programme.
Professor Lisa Roberts, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter, said: “Our CSM is known worldwide for its crucial role in providing skills provision, research and innovation in mining and critical minerals resourcing.
“One of the key missions of our Strategy 2030 goal is to lead meaningful action against the climate emergency and ecological crisis. Mining is integral to modern society, and as we look to transition to Net Zero, the demand for critical minerals is only going to increase.”
Professor Patrick Foster, Head of CSM, said: “We are thrilled that the undergraduate Mining Engineering programme is being reintroduced by the University. The CSM is one of the world’s leading mining institutions and has a rich tradition of ensuring thousands of students have the very best qualifications to forge successful careers across the globe.
“The work that we do have never been more crucial, as we transition towards net zero and the demand for critical minerals increases. It is vital that we are at the forefront of supporting future generations of mining engineers, to help build a greener future for us all.”
Andrew Fulton, President of the MAUK - The Mining Association of the UK and Chairperson of the UK Mining Education Forum said “This is extremely positive news for the UK mining industry and a recognition by the University of the crucial role that minerals and mining has in ensuring a realistic and sustainable transition to net-zero for society. We as an industry will support this programme to ensure its long term success.”
